New Official PlayStation 3 Price Announced

It’s official: Sony just announced the price cut for PlayStation 3 at their Gamescom show in Cologne. As we reported earlier, the price cut was hinted at by retailers discounting their old stock nice and early but this official announcement means that we’ll start seeing everyone charging the new prices from now on.

Prices announced were for global reductions but in Euros, Dollars and Yen, with no sterling equivalents so we’ll have to see how the exchange rate treats us on this side of the channel. They also neglected to announce reductions in relation to each hdd model. They just said it would be reduced to €249, which, we assume is for the 320GB version.

With retailer discounts, we could see prices fall even lower than that. It looks like this might be a strong Q4 for Sony in the west, even without the Vita.

Update: MCV’s Editor in Chief has said that the UK price has been confirmed to them at £199. Again, we assume that’s for the 320GB model.

  1. Why the hell do they announce the new price in dollars and yen, but not in pounds at a EUROPEAN games show!? Afterall, aren’t we the biggest market in europe?

    • They announced it in Euros. Kinda fits, no?

      • Yeah, but why USD and Yen. They don’t fit do they?

      • Unless the USA and Japan are now in Europe and the UK isn’t anymore and someone neglected to tell me ;)

      • We are your new Irish overlords.
        Bow to us.

  2. time for a slim at 199

  3. Already got 3 PS3’s, so don’t need another one, but this is awesome news as I can see a few more of my friends deciding to pick one up now :)

  4. Brilliant I wonder if I should get one around Christmas as a back-up =/
Will have to ask my wife lol

  5. Welcome news, my slim PS3 is a similar age to my 60GB when it packed in and I’m getting a bit anxious and using it sparingly.

  6. Great news, my 40 gigger is still going strong but if it ever breaks it wont break the bank to replace it

  7. Only place I’ve found so far with new(er) prices is Tesco. 320gb @ £215 and 160gb @ £192. Not quite £199 for the 320gb. Hopefully a bit of a price war will sort that out.

  8. If its under £199 in the shops in the UK then that would be cool :P
The cheapest Xbox 360 is £149 in Argos(UK) & the cheapest PS3 was £249(Argos) :-/ Hopefully the cheapest PS3 will be under £199 now;)

  9. *looks at 60Gb phat which cost me €630*.. I still love you more :)

  10. Finally we see the RRP dip beneath the fabled £200 price barrier. Absolutely the best news so far. Hope they’ve got decent stock this Christmas.
