It’s official: Sony just announced the price cut for PlayStation 3 at their Gamescom show in Cologne. As we reported earlier, the price cut was hinted at by retailers discounting their old stock nice and early but this official announcement means that we’ll start seeing everyone charging the new prices from now on.
Prices announced were for global reductions but in Euros, Dollars and Yen, with no sterling equivalents so we’ll have to see how the exchange rate treats us on this side of the channel. They also neglected to announce reductions in relation to each hdd model. They just said it would be reduced to €249, which, we assume is for the 320GB version.
With retailer discounts, we could see prices fall even lower than that. It looks like this might be a strong Q4 for Sony in the west, even without the Vita.
Update: MCV’s Editor in Chief has said that the UK price has been confirmed to them at £199. Again, we assume that’s for the 320GB model.

I’ve been thinking of getting a PS3 when I’m at university, this is making it very tempting.

Fantastic price. A lot of people will be interested in the Bluray capabilities (a lot of people still dont have one) along with the free online gaming aspect. Sales should increase.

cheaper than the Vita? I really don’t understand that pricing policy at all.
Reality Check

That’s good news for those that want or need a new one. I almost find it to be too cheap, since I payed twice the price.
