A huge Payday 2 engine upgrade is coming with an open beta on 30th June

payday 2 update patch notes

Big things are coming to Payday 2, with Sidetrack Games announcing that the game will be transported to the all-new Diesel 3.0 engine, bringing performance improvements, a small game install, 64-bit support and more to the 13-year-old heist ’em up.

This update will enter into open beta on 30th June, running until the end of July to allow the team to iron out kinks and for modders to update their work.

The team break down the headline features as follows:

  • The long awaited port to 64 bits
  • An upgrade from DX9 to DX11 rendering
  • Game file size reduction to ~32gb
  • Faster load times on SSDs
  • 6 character lobby codes
  • And more…

A 64-bit executable and using DX11 for rendering should both go a long way to ensuring that Payday 2 remains playable and compatible with PCs going forward.

A full set of notes for the update coming on the 30th.

Starbreeze Games themselves are still hard at work on Payday 3, working to revamp the newer game’s various features, add more content, and the like. But Payday 2 has remained popular amongst the series’ fans, and so Starbreeze entrusted that game’s future care to Sidetrack Games in 2025. Sidetrack’s roots are within the modding community, formerly known as the MUG Team and having previously taken over development of RAID: World War II for Starbreeze.
