Valve’s recently announced system of trading in game items and gifting games has gone live. The system will initially allow users to trade items for Team Fortress 2 and Spiral Knights as well as gifted games. Once Valve has proven to other publishers that the system can be positive, we would expect other items to become tradable.
What you won’t be able to trade is already activated “second hand” games. While some were hoping that Valve may be able to solve the problem of pre-owned in some way, it won’t be today. The items which can be traded are free of any region locks and there’s a 90 day cool off period for new accounts wishing to trade so hopefully we won’t see too much “gaming the system”.
There’s a FAQ which tells us that Portal 2 item trading is on the horizon and that Valve are working with others to get trading and the new inventory system into other games.

Yay! I got Super Meat Boy and Cogs, if anybody has something interesting to trade with. (Steam: Erroneus)
And hats!

Hope it works OK as it’s a good idea, if implemented right.

What do you mean, item trading? For Portal 2?
I haven’t played the co-op yet, is that where there’s items to trade?
Because I finished the single-player the other day, and there was nothing of the sort popping up.

I’m assuming they’re referring to the copy of Portal 2 on the PC that got given out with the PS3. If it’s no use to you it looks like you can trade it.
Pretty sure I’ve got a “gift” version of Half Life 2 on steam that I must have got for buying The Orange Box on PC as well as Half Life 2 when it launched (I’m not going nuts, it was the cheapest way to get episode 1 & 2)
colossalblue
you can never have too many copies of Half Life 2.
Erroneus
Items are only for co-op, which are those you can trade.

What kind of items can you trade in co-op?

Interesting system, does this mean in the next sale I should get two copies of everything?
