The Last Guardian Skipping TGS

An update on the PlayStation Blog has revealed that Team Ico’s The Last Guardian will be skipping this month’s Tokyo Games Show, amid concerns about the game’s development.

“We wanted to confirm that The Last Guardian is not on the schedule for this year’s Tokyo Game Show,” reads the update. “However we can assure you that Ueda-san and the rest of the development team are hard at work to bring his lofty vision to life and deliver the very best gaming experience possible.”

In an interview with VG247 last month, Shuhei Yoshida (head of Sony’s Worldwide Studios) mentioned concerns about the game: “The Last Guardian team has been making progress. It’s been very difficult in terms of seeing the progress: not as fast as we’d been hoping for, and the team has been under big pressure. But we’re still making progress, so I’d like to continue to support and keep waiting for great news sometime in the future.”

Bluepoint Games’ Ico and Shadow of the Colossus Collection is due out at the end of the month (shameless plug: we gave it a 9!), but it sounds like follow-up The Last Guardian might be a little further out than we’d hoped.

  1. Things come to those who wait….and wait.

Would rather this than an epic day-one patch!

  2. :(

Wonder what its chances are of making its unspecified 2012 release date

    • Just think of all the November releases you’ll still be playing, and the new Bioshock, and the Vita in March. There is plenty of time for this! :)

      • That was my other thought. It’s not like we’re starved of games right now (not aimed at Chris, but in general). Only last night I was saying to a few of the TSA guys that it’s the finest gaming quarter (for me) that I’ve ever seen!

      • Agreed, plus my bank balance can’t take anymore abuse right now. I don’t want to start dipping into my son’s family allowance money, that just wouldn’t be fair…..right?

      • +1 to that. So much releasing and simply not enough time to fit it all in.

  3. As long as Ueda is happy with it (and I think his vision is sublime) then that’s me happy. Sure, I’d love to play it in the next month or two but even if it’s 12 months from now, I’m happy waiting as Team Ico know what they’re doing.

    • Totally agree, a company I have total faith in to deliver a quality product, no matter how long it takes.. Their vagueness annoys me somewhat though, no website, never any news unless its – this got delayed again..

  4. I kind of expected this and although it’s still a little disappointing i’m happy to wait.

  5. Still remember the Last Guardian trailer, made me cry like a baby for some reason – why I have no idea.

  6. As long as it eventually comes, I am happy for Team Ico to spend all the time they need to ensure Ueda-san’s vision remains pure and uncompromised.

  7. Colour me surprised.

  8. I wonder if there is trouble in the development camp. This game seems to have been in development for ages, with very little to show, and I sense frustration from Sony. Is this the usual case for Team Ico?

  9. Let’s be honest: it doesn’t look good, Jim.

Ico was playable at E3 2001 (and released in September 2001). Colossus was playable at E3 2005 (and released in September 2005). Ueda is now two years behind schedule with The Last Guardian. If the game is not demoed at TGS, I just can’t imagine Sony releasing it early next year — considering the game has so far garnered next to no public promotion on the mainstream market.

Journey might get away with the “niche” etiquette, but I strongly doubt Sony will be content with a handful of sales for TLG. Not after six years of development. Either Ueda will come out as a hero, or he won’t make games anymore.

  10. Disappointing but there’s already more coming out than I can afford, never mind have time to play.
