WeView: Angry Birds

Yes, my obvious hints at you having a game to be angry about (and telling everyone on Twitter that I’d be picking this game) have lead us to our first mobile title; Angry Birds. Well I say mobile, but that was just the start for Rovio. It may have originated on iOS but you can play it pretty much anywhere now. Got just about any smartphone? Rovio’s got you covered. How about a PSP or PS3? You’re sorted there. Even if you’ve only got a web browser there’s a version for you; in under two years Angry Birds has become almost ubiquitous.

Now normally I’d link you to our review of the game here to tell you about Angry Birds. Sadly, no such review exists; there was one on AppTilt but that sister site has now vanished into the mists. Never fear though, for I have a back up plan that I have dubbed “Operation Ask Alex”. As our resident captain of all things iOS related he seemed the obvious choice to ask about Rovio’s juggernaut. Here’s what he had to say:

People moan about and belittle Angry Birds as if it’s somehow an inferior game to be seen playing. The opposite is true – the game is clearly very simple but through hugely aggressive updating and a certain amount of marketing flair the 2D puzzler has, alongside Doodle Jump, proved that people will buy something that’s addictive and cheap in the millions.

Millions. Yes, it might only make 40p or so per copy sold and there’ll be the publisher to pay out of that, but it shifts more per month than so-called AAA console titles and its move to PSN made it the biggest selling game on the platform. People want Angry Birds, because, above all else, it’s rather brilliant.

Hate it all you want, but you’re massively outnumbered.

He’s right of course, hating Angry Birds does seem to put you in the minority of those who have an opinion on the fowl flinging fun. However, that doesn’t make it invalid as an opinion and if you can’t stand it then here’s your chance to air your opinion. Of course if you love it then it’s still your chance to put out your thoughts on the game, that’s the whole point.

So if you feel like taking part just head over to the forums and leave us your thoughts on the game. Whilst I’m not going to discount longer reviews, please remember that the aim is for short, snappy opinions. More than that I simply don’t have the time to wade through longer reviews, so if you want to have your opinion included in the verdict post try to keep it short.

Once you’ve written your review make sure you give it a score on the Buy ItBargain Bin ItRent ItAvoid It scale. Remember, if you want your score and opinion included in Monday’s verdict post you need to have it done by Sunday afternoon, otherwise I’ll have written it and you’ll be left out in the cold.

  1. My mother does nothing but play this. :(

  2. I’ve played it a fair amount, but can’t say it’s something I’d hugely recommend – there are far better portable games out there. My vote on the scale is to rent it

  3. I have nothing but praise for Angry Birds and other of its ilk. There is plenty of room for good games not matter the platform or file size. Angry Birds hasn’t made me abandon my PS3 and nothing will…until the PS4.
