Battlefield 3 Beta Goes Open To All

The Xbox 360 version of the Battlefield 3 beta is now available to all via the Marketplace. The PS3 version is due to go up on the store for everyone later today. We’re celebrating by using a banner of that same piece of key art that’s absolutely everywhere. All the time. I know, we’re kind of bored with it too. It needs more unicorns.

Anyway, no more pre-order bonuses, Medal of Honor access codes or other special methods of entry. The beta will be open for everyone, making it a much larger test of how well it’s going to work.

Judging by the queues for the multiplayer side of the game at EGX, it’s going to be in some demand. It will be interesting to hear what you all think of it in the comments!

  1. Really enjoying the actual gameplay on the beta, but I really don’t like the menus and presentation that much compared to BC2’s which was nice, clean and minimal. Still, its good where it matters :)

    • Try it on PC if you havent already, Battlelog is god awful. You cant rebind keys. You cant even exit the game or get into the options menu when your dead… the only way to adjust things like gfx and such is during live play… and if your killed while you are in the options it kicks you out and you have to start allll over again. Feels like a good game so far, but still has a ton of issues.

  2. I’ll give this a try on PC and PS3. The PC version is obviously going to be better but the people I actually want to play the game with will all be on PS3. Looks like I might have to end up with both.

    • At its current state id say ps3 would be the safer bet.. ya you have larger battles on pc and the gfx are better, but battlelog is just horrid.

  3. PS3 is already up started downloading an hour ago.

    • It’s taking more than an hour to download? Is that because (a) it’s massive, (b) psn servers are getting swamped or (c) your internets are crap?
      Wish one of my flatmates was off today, to get it dled ready for me getting home from work :/

      • I was playing a game online so it was pending. Actually downloading pretty quickly now.

      • might have to pop home for lunch. Turn the ps3 on and start the download, that way ill avoid the downtime too :D

      • 6 hrs for me…

        Live in a village with piss poor broadband speeds, fine for gaming but downloading is a nightmare.

        Just called the wife and talked here through doing a PS3 system update and then kicking off the BF3 download from the store.

        Will be ready to when i get home from work around 7:30, which luckliy also avoids the PSN downtime as well.

  4. I had a blast with it at eurogamer – That metro level was just awesome & can’t wait to see what they have in store for the rest of the maps too.

    I have now pre-ordered my copy (first time i have ever pre-ordered anything!), & it’s already paid for too. :)

    Just need to wait for it to drop onto my doormat now – Safe to say that the next 3 or 4 weeks may be the longest of my life!

    • We were evaculated from our office yesterday due to a gas leak. Whilst this was lucky (sort of), one day later would have been perfect!

      • At 5:30pm? Isn’t the PSN down between 5pm and 9pm tonight hence why I grabbed it early this morning.

  6. I managed to grab the beta this morning on PSN at around 9:10am so its available now to all. Had a quick blast of 10 mins before racing of to work. All good so far.

  7. I may download it later to whoop some TSAers ass* I have heard that there is barely any tanks, jets and quad bikes. :-/ Can’t a madman get a jet and crash it into a group of TSAers?

      There’s none in the beta. A shame really, as this isn’t what the actual Battlefield experience is about.

      • There is none!? I’m not getting the beta then as i just want to run people over in a tank or crash a jet into them. What is the point of showing some tank gameplay and then not including it into the beta. I was very good with the tank in BC2. I got many many kills. :D

      • Ah, it seems that you were my favourite type of prey then Steve – I love tank hunting.

      • I usually ended up killing anyone who dared to try and blow my tank up. :D Except when the campers tried to. They killed me many times. :( Noone was safe from me when i was driving a tank. :)

      • Oh no, i am an up close & personal kind of guy! C4 all the way! :)

        Yogdog will tell you that i spent a good 5 minutes or so chasing a tank (i was on foot) back to our spawning point on one of the maps – We had a bit of a dance, but the end result was me re-joining my squad with the shell of a tank burning away in the background.

        Not a term i like to use too often, but it was pretty epic!

      • That was a pretty epic game, forrest! Earned my tank hunting medal for that :)
        Steven, you were my favourite type of prey as well, platinum stars with both c4 and rpg7 :)

      • The beta’s taking place in Paris. I don’t know if you’re familiar or not with the place, but I don’t see many tanks here on an average day. Except maybe on the 14th of July.

    • Yeah, the map is a little too confined for vehicles – Doesn’t make it any less enjoyable though IMO.

      & don’t panic, i am sure that there will be plenty of levels that do have vehicles on come release!

  8. Its fantastic, I had a whole day playing it on the PS3 yesterday. Lots of bugs, but they will get sorted, other than that its brilliant. The sound will blow you away too.

  9. Tried it. Generic shooter vol 99 mk II.
    Graphics are a bit iffy too… Particularly after all that talk of using the spu’s to their full potential, was expecting it to look a little cleaner, as it is it looks like theyve bitten off more than the ps3 can chew.

    • its an old build, and personally I think the graphics looks pretty good. The lighting in the subway is especially good. all shooters do the same thing in the end, so really nothing is going to be sticking out as game breaking.

      • True bilb, not seen the subway level, but the streets level looks rough, lighting is good, but like crysis 2 the shadows and general resolution are a bit erm gameloft.. Secretly hoping its an old build too but it wont be far off

  10. been playing it through early access for a few days and first impressions are very good. Feels like a shooter should and looks incredible, I’m interested to see how COD is going to respond because they’ve set the bar really high

    • I think it’s a bit late in the day for CoD to change their game [literally] to beat this.

    • Lets be honest here, it’s not COD that has a point to prove.

      Like it or not, you can’t argue with those sales figures…

      • I agree, as much as I hate what they did to the franchise… it is a monster.. It’s not going anywhere for a long time… and from what Ive played over the last 2 days.. BF3 seems like a step back from BC2 IMHO.
