MW3 Is “Biggest Entertainment Launch Ever”

Activision have emailed to let us know that the latest Call of Duty has “shattered” previous day-one sales records and is the “biggest entertainment launch ever”.

The game has, according to the publisher’s own estimates (and those of Charttrack) sold more than $400 million, with 6.5 million units shifted in North America and the UK alone, in just the first 24 hours.

“This marks the third consecutive year that the Call of Duty franchise has set day one launch records across all forms of entertainment, something no other entertainment franchise in any medium has ever accomplished,” says the ballsy PR.

Previous sell-throughs were $360 million for Black Ops and $310 million for Modern Warfare 2.

“We believe the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is the biggest entertainment launch of all time in any medium, and we achieved this record with sales from only two territories,” said Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard.

Proving that there’s insane money in gaming, the LTD sales for the franchise now exceed worldwide box office figures for Star Wars and Lord of the Rings.

  1. I’m certainly not a CoD hater, but I do wish that other games got this sort of success too, because while I’m sure this game is great, there are almost certainly better games out there that deserve better than the sales they get.

  2. COD – why are you so popular?
