Morrowind & Cyrodiil in Skyrim?

An intrepid explorer has discovered that both Morrowind & Cyrodiil are in Skyrim, although unaccessible to the player without console commands to activate no clipping.

The explorer is Jesse, 19, from Finland who has documented his findings on his Tumblr blog. Apparently you can see Morrowind if you make your way to Stendarr’s Beacon and follow a path North East that goes between two mountains. Eventually you’ll come across an arch.

Now, you can’t go past the arch unless, as Jesse did, you use console commands to break through the invisible wall put in by Bethesda. Okay, so what clue is there to suggest this is Morrowind?  How about Red Mountain, the volcano on Wardenfell, which is located in Morrowind?

What about Cyrodiil then?

Anyone who has played Oblivion should instantly recognise that as the Imperial City. This shot has been taken from the Oblivion map, the shot below is from Skyrim and shows a similar landmass, without the detail. Now both Cyrodiil and Morrowind are uninhabited in game and the textures get worse the further you move from Skyrim.

The mystery is: why has Bethesda programmed these areas into Skyrim and then made the areas inaccessible? Perhaps the areas are there for future DLC? Or maybe it’s for the modder community to play around with. Maybe it’s nothing more than a giant easter egg.

Whatever the reason for the inclusion, I am impressed that Bethesda has gone to all this trouble.

  1. Wowser, that would be some hefty DLC. Would be most impressed if the arch is openned under the guise of an update.

Quick question – is this the final land of the Elder Scrolls to be implemented in a game?

    • DOn’t think so, All I know is the last games where in there own regions… the first two though I’m not sure but the Second was Daggerfall?

      • The first one was Arena, and i believe it actually spanned the entirety of Tamriel. Obviously though, it came out in the early 90’s you can kinda guess what the game would look like graphics wise.

    • As far as im aware Elsweyr, Summerset Isle, Valenwood and Black Marsh have not been represented in an Elder Scrolls games as of yet, barring certain mods. Skyrim, Cyrodiil, Morrowind, High Rock and Hammerfell have been used before. Although Morrowind, the game, only took place on the island of Vvardenfell and not the entire landmass of Morrowind.

      • Sweet, thanks for the knowledge. I’m a relative noob having only joined at Oblivion.

  2. Would be great to see some DLC packs going back to Morrowind, etc.

  3. If there’s Morrowind, i’m buying.

  4. Well they’ve said that they were going to focus on a few huge bits of dlc, as opposed to smaller Fallout-ish chunks.

Fingers crossed we can go exploring outside of Skyrim, that would be completely awesome :)

  5. I cant even begin to think of expansions until I’ve searched a lot more of Skyrim! I’m 42 hours in and I’ve only just ventured to the Western third of the map! Absolutely loving it too, finding so many really cool places and environments. I’m happy enough without an expansion for now, although my opinion might change next year depending how much I still have left to do in the game.

    • I hear you. I am now at 130 hours. There are still 2 towns I haven’t been to, and well over a third of the map left to uncover.

£40, 130 hours = 31p per hour. Awesome gaming value by any stretch. And thats before I create my second character…

      • 130hrs!!! It’s only been out for about 300hrs.

      • Yup, just double checked. 133hrs 32 mins 15 seconds. In my defence, I was prevented from sleeping for 3 days in a row, then it was the weekend….

  6. Predictable, but still intriguing. You could already reach a large part of Elsweyr in vanilla Oblivion by disabling the map borders via console command, although nothing was ever made out of this (officially).

Somehow I don’t see Bethesda trying to shoehorn the original Morrowind and Oblivion games into Skyrim via huge DLCs, that would be unusual from them and would require an awful lot of work (especially for the former).
