Worrying news this evening, as it seems that GameStop has been calling customers who have pre-ordered PS3 exclusive The Last Guardian with the following message:
“Hello, this is GameStop calling with important news regarding your reservation. We’ve been notified by the vendor that The Last Guardian has been canceled. To reserve a different title or have your reservation money refunded, please go to your local store.
To repeat, we’ve been notified that the vendor has canceled production of the game The Last Guardian. If you have any questions please call your local store. Thank you. Goodbye.”
The game is no longer listed on the GameStop website. It is, however, still on the sites of other retailers. We await something official from Sony, and fingers crossed this is just an error.
Update: According to Kotaku, Sony’s senior director of corporate communications, Patrick Seybold, says the game is still on. Hopefully this means it’s just a GameStop error.
Update 2: GameStop have backtracked. “The Last Guardian has not been cancelled by Sony as we incorrectly stated in an automated call to reservation customers,” it said.
“Because the game did not have a specific release date, GameStop made the decision to remove the game from our system,” continues the statement. “The Last Guardian will be reinstated for pre-order when a firm launch date is known.”

As tempted as i am to stick my head in the sand and pretend all will be ok, this is definately not a good sign and basically confirms to me this will either be cancelled or unfinished shite
nofi
Yeah, it’s definitely not a good sign.

This doesn’t sound good. I wouldn’t normally worry about a supplier cancelling a pre-order, but this particular game has been quiet for such a long time. Fingers crossed it’s all a mistake.

Post updated with backtracking from the retailer.

Turns out I was right then. When you know how a company like GameStop runs, you expect these kind of things. Code word: Battle Toads. They aren’t the subject of so much ire for no reason.

I never doubted you ;). Having not used gamestop, I wouldn’t know anything about their practices. A shining example this is

Thank god TV News is not like the internet gaming sites news or it would go something like this –
“World War 3 is starting”
(1 hour later) ‘Update 2’ “We are all doomed”
(2 hours later) ‘Update 3’ “Sorry false alarm”
:D

How do you think news works?? They report on what is available at the time. If it turns out that the information was incorrect, they issue an update to correct the error.
Nothing to see here.
(Oh & i hardly think that the release of TLG is comparable to WW3!!)

PR clusterfuck of a massive order.

ahw man you had me going for a while…

Good thing it’s still on track but I wasn’t even that shocked when I read the news. With important people leaving the team and no real updates on the game progress it kind of feels like it’s been canceled…

Glad I read this after the updates, what a foolish retailer. I hope they have to apologise.
