Interplay Surrenders Rights To Fallout MMO

Interplay has surrendered its rights over the Fallout MMO to Bethesda. The legal dispute was settled out of court where Interplay gave up the rights for $2 million. Interplay still holds the rights to Fallout 1, 2 & Tactics until 2013. When that expires those publishing rights will go back to Bethesda.

Robert Altman, CEO of Zenimax, Bethesda’s parent company, spoke about the case.

“While we strongly believe in the merits of our suits, we are pleased to avoid the distraction and expense of litigation while completely resolving all claims to the Fallout IP. Fallout is an important property of ZeniMax and we are now able to develop future Fallout titles for our fans without third party involvement or the overhang of others’ legal claims.”

The legal dispute first began between Bethesda and Interplay in 2007, where Bethesda claimed that Interplay had not met the contractual terms set by both parties in relation to the Fallout MMO, including Interplay raising funding for the project and starting work on the game.

There has been no mention on whether Bethesda will be developing a Fallout MMO itself.

  1. Excellent, as the last Fallout Game that they did was Brotherhood Of Steel and that is the worst game of the franchise. I mean, it crapped all over the lore and barely resembled a typical Fallout game.

I wonder if Bethesda will start development on Fallout 4? And i’m going to bet that Interplay won’t last another year as they are running out of funds.

    • Interplay PUBLISHED fallout. 13 degrees east made Fallout Tactics. Black Isle make Fallout 1 & 2

  2. Really adore Fallout as a franchise. Although I have to admit I never played the Interplay games. I just hope Bethesda can make a new awesome fallout, with the Skyrim engine. That will be amazing. Not sure about an MMO though..

  3. Would love to see an Fallout MMO. If its just like Fallout 3 but bigger world, more weapons, more towns, items and quests then that sounds awesome to me. Otherwise just bring us a non buggy Fallout 4.
