PS Vita Owner Plays Battlefield 3 & Red Dead Redemption

I have watched this video four times now and I cannot spot any evidence of it being fake or clever CGI – but who knows?

A giveaway would be if the hands of the person controlling the game are out of sync with the video but as far as I can tell this is real.

The problem? You need to be running custom firmware on your PS3.

  1. I am incredibly tempted to pre-order a Vita. I really don’t know if I should though…
These sorts of features are what sway decisions, especially ones as expensive as this. Sony really should encourage more developers to allow for this sort of stuff to happen.
Personally, if I were to get a Vita, I wouldn’t want to risk running CFW and then suffering the repercussions.

  2. As cool as the concept may be, remote play is nearly unplayable for any type of serious game. BlazBlue Calamity Trigger for PS3 had remote play capabilities and there was just too much of a delay for it to be taken seriously. Other games suffer the same fate as well. I remember trying to play PixelJunk Monsters via remote play and there was always a delay no matter what.

I haven’t watched the video yet, but a reason why the video and hands are out of sync might just be due to the delay I mentioned above. It’s extremely apparent for games that truly support the function, so I’d imagine it would be the same or even worse for games that don’t.

The custom firmware PS3 remote play stuff was also done on the original PSP.

    • Silly question, but shouldn’t this have less of a lag than OnLive?

  3. Sony need to wise up and get this working asap. Firstly (and I don’t think I’m alone) I will only buy the vita if this is possible. ASAP because if it comes out in a year then I’ll buy it in a year….at the reduced price and not new price.

This, to me, is what makes this product stand out from the competitors.

  4. Obviously i’m against hacking, but stuff like this makes the Vita approximately 20 times better and is a massive selling point. Sony should really work with these guys rather than against them.

  5. Surely Sony would be able to implement a rule where ALL GAMES on the PS3 MUST have a remote play option for the Vita, otherwise, they are not allowed to be published. This would be just like the way Microsoft won’t allow games to be released on the Xbox Live Marketplace AFTER any other store ie. Playstation Store.

  6. As mentioned earlier, remote play should be available on games without the need for CFW. I’d even be prepared to pay an additional extra charge for the option but I wouldn’t buy another copy just to play on-the-go.

  7. You should be able to start playing a game on ps3…and if you decide to nip out, upload the remainder of the level to Vita and keep gaming..I hope Vita bridges games like these..
