Report: OpCapita Buys Game For £1

The story rumbles on, with the latest being that OpCapita have bought GAME, with a formal announcement expected tomorrow.

The BBC reports that the deal will save the still open stores and – hopefully – the associated jobs. That means that 333 branches will remain open, and over 3,000 employees.

RBS, along with five other banks, are owed £85m between them. The group have apparently approved the OpCapita takeover.

The Telegraph says that OpCapita paid £1.

  1. £1? GAME would NEVER sell anything for £1 :D Welcome to ‘RIP OFF BRITAIN’ GAME…now you know how we feel being Ripped off every time we walked into your stores :-/

    • There were a few games they were selling for 98p just before they closed the stores, maybe they realised they needed to reduce their prices to bring in buyers……….

  2. Would they not roll the Game brand into Comet? They’ve been looking to find a proper differentiator between Comet and PcWorld for ages – this could be it. Realistically, £85m debt for a nationwide shop chain, some breathing space from creditors and a chane for a proper restructure isn’t as bad a proposition as some might think. Although it does make me wonder just what horrors were in store had the alleged RBS bid gone ahead

  3. Just helped game out a little bit bought two download copies of SHOGUN 2 for £16. Pretty decent pricing on that front though everywhere else is around £20 each.

  4. This isn’t good news for GAME, Opcapita is a joke of a company.

  5. people kept saying preowned prices at game were ridiculous, but i didn’t realise how ridiculous till now. ^_^

anyway, let’s hope this is the start of a turnaround for game, and its staff.

there should be money to be made with game, gaming is still a big money industry in this country, wasn’t there and article here recently about gaming spending being more than video for the first time?

well managed, game could become a successful business again.

  6. I’m guessing the next company Opcapita will buy their next company for 50p.

I really hope they don’t shut Game down and use their stores as Asdas as that would probably start a war between them and Tesco.

If Opcapita doesn’t give Game a massive kick up the arse and restructure them so that they will be a better company thus resulting in more customers then, i will be very disappointed in Opcapita.

Opcapita, if for some strange once in a full moon reason that you are reading this, force Game to reduce the amount of shelf space that is reserved for preowned and focus on both new and preowned. 50% shelf space for preowned, and 50% for new. Reduce prices after a few months/weeks depending on the game and bring back the Saturday deals. Also, try to outdo Amazon via the sites.

I wonder if publishers are going to support Game or if they will wait and see what Opcapita will do with them then work out a deal with Game seeing as they are the UK’s last gaming specialist and thus have very little compition on the high street.
