Sony are aiming to get the follow-up to the PS3 (currently dubbed Orbis, even as just a codename) out before Microsoft get their next console out, sources are claiming.
The report, which says that the PS4 has been in design planning stage for about two years (something we were told on the phone last week) says that Sony are confident “it will have the console at market ahead of the next generation Xbox next Christmas.”
“Sony are completely in the belief that they have the jump on Microsoft this time,” the source said. “You should be watching the timing of next year’s E3 keynotes, and who’s going to go first.”
It’s believed that some publishers (Ubisoft are named, for example) and developers know all about the PS4, or whatever it’s called, whilst others are likely to be briefed over the next few months.

I think launching 1st is a bad idea. Yes it hurt them with PS3 but thats because they had hardware that was hard to master. Say they do wait a year. But that year was taken to make a console that was just as powerful as next xbox.
BUT just as easy to programe for (much like the Vita) and was either same price or maybe even cheaper then a year old xbox.
Plus an improved online structure which had more features for those who paid, but didnt stop those who didnt want to pay from going online.
Lots of Vita compatible games, and lots of features that used the Vita.
And ofcourse a killer 1st and 3rd party launch game line up and I don’t think they will have a problem. Having hardware that at a min matches the next xbox is a must, and making the hardware a dream to work with for developers is a must imo.

Didn’t Sony say a while back that they were in no hurry to release the PS4 before anyone else? I may have read it on this site last year.

I hope MS and Sony won’t cut corners in an attempt to get their console out first as most of the time, it annoys the customer. I hope both of them have got some games lined up for the launch as a gaming drought with your new console is never a good thing.

cut corners like…. Poor solder? YLOD or RROD

I’m loving the confident approach. Day one for me, can’t wait to see what magic the PS4/ Orbis will hold….

I think sony realise that the launch of the PS3 wasn’t good for them, in no small part thanks to the fact that they seemed to think that because it was preceded by the PS2 it would sell. Complacency on their part.
I reckon sony won’t miss a trick with this next launch, lets hope theres strong first party support. Because if naughty dog are working on The last of us that means theres no way there will be a PS4 launch game from them, unless ND have 2 teams working in parallel.

Please Sony don’t call it Orbis, It’s absolutely rubbish, leave it at PS4.

As someone noted in other place, in Japanese the number 4 is SHI but SHI (written with other ideogram) means death. It is the equivalent of 13 in Western culture. That’s why they’ll probably codename it in Japan (at least).

A console worth depends on its games portfolio. Releasing a new console just because competition is going to release a new version of theirs is something awkward. Let’s face: XBox 360 is outdated. It supports small media (no bluray), small internal HD, no native WiFi, etc. Not to mention that even with recent enhancements, XBox 360 is extremely sensitive to environmental conditions (specially temperature). Then, it makes sense for Microsoft to release a new console ASAP. This without mentioning that XBox 360 is not a safe platform either for developers (piracy) and users (privacy).
As for Sony, PS3 games are far from extracting all juice from hardware platform. The painful problem of piracy is finally controlled and production costs are going downhill. Not to mention that migrating from Cell/NVIDIA to AMD + AMD will kill any automatic portability from PS3.
Yet, Sony just launch Vita and, IMHO, it is just not selling well. They’ll have to drop prices soon in order to generate revenue enough to attract studios to develop for this console. Thus, hurrying to launch a new console at this moment just seem preposterous.

I don’t know about this. I’m happy with my PS3’s capabilities at the moment and don’t really see that changing. I can’t really say too much until we know the details but I don’t know what they could do to make me interested.

When PS3 took so long to come out I had a 360 for a while but I soon went back to Sony when it was released. Even if the next Xbox does release first I think I’ll stick with Sony now. I’m not sure I even really want a PS4 yet, mind you I said that about Vita and still got one!!!!!
