Minecraft Creator Notch Speaks Out On EA’s “Indie” Bundle

Markus Persson, with over 650,000 followers, has spoken out on Twitter about EA’s recent ‘indie’ bundle offer.

“EA releases an “indie bundle”? That’s not how that works, EA,” he said. “Stop attempting to ruin everything, you bunch of cynical bastards.”

“Indies are saving gaming. EA is methodically destroying it,” he added.

The bundle released yesterday on Steam, and consists of Deathspank, Deathspank: Thongs of Virtue, Gatling Gears, Shank, Shank 2 and Warp, for just £14.38.

“The games in the bundle are good,” he later added, “I’m not questioning them. I’m questioning EA.”

  1. Notch, i doubt you are classed as an indie developer as i recall you signing a deal with MS for Minecraft. Unless Indie now means, a small time developer who has signed up with a major publisher.

I agree that EA shouldn’t have branded the bundle as indie titles as they are not made by indie developers. Arcade bundle, would have been okay as i think the games would be found in an arcade if arcades were still a major part of gaming.

I have a bit of a dislike of EA and can be a cycincal barsteward when talking about them but they won’t ruin everything. Instead, they’ll sell it to us as day -100 DLC. :op

  2. Notch did clarify “For what it’s worth, I don’t even call Mojang inde any more. Vlambeer is indie. Polytron is indie. Stephen, Ed, Terry, Derek, Tommy and Chris are indie.”

He later when on to say “Twitter quotes are NOT NEWS. You’re better than that, and you make me feel dirty.”

    • Maybe he should just shut the fuck up then.

  3. Loath the word “indie” but meh EA’s getting loads of bad press recently, not great for them.

  4. As far as i’m aware proper indie devs dont charge over 16 quid for their games.

this minecraft guy is so hypocritical

    • Mate, Indie devs charge everything from a fiver for alpha funding to £25 upon full release, MC isnt any different from the others and for the amount of time ive gotten from it (200+ Hrs) its worth every penny.

      • Yeah, then they end up going for 3 quid in a charity bundle…dont see whatever his name is putting MC in any indie bundles for the sake of charity.

I don’t care what price MC is just he shouldn’t stand on his soap box and look so stupid.

  5. What a load of shit.

  6. so, he questioning EA for releasing good games at a good price?

    makes perfect sense :)

  7. I really couldn’t give a shite who publishes a game.

I care about whether I enjoy it or not.

  8. I’m sorry, but anyone buying a game simply because it’s ‘Indie’ isn’t exactly being smart anyway.
I’ll only buy a game if I think it’s good, if I want to donate to a charity, there are actual charities around.
Being indie is not always the same as being good.

Being a good game is being good.

    • “Being indie is not always the same as being good.” Hear hear!
