Sony Speaks About The Last Guardian’s No-Show

Sony’s E3 press conference was a little bit flat this year.

They showed a few great looking things but there was more that they didn’t show. Among the most obviously conspicuous by its absence was The Last Guardian. All the rumours and snippets of information we’ve heard are not promising for this much anticipated title. Team ICO has lost some key staff and there are now several studios assisting in keeping The Last Guardian on track.

So when Sony failed to mention it in Los Angeles, we all sucked in our breath and prepared ourselves for the disappointment of one of our most anticipated games in years disappearing into development oblivion.

Speaking to Giant Bomb’s Patrick Klepek, head of PlayStation worldwide development, Shuhei Yushida was asked about the game’s progress. “We have the team working hard, and still it’s not the right time to give people an update,” he said.

So, it’s coming but it still isn’t ready to show or even talk about. Not exactly filling us with confidence but I’ve now decided to cling to the unfounded hope that The Last Guardian is simply delayed while they shuffle it into a launch release for the PS4/Orbis next year.

  1. Disheartening but I think everyone has got use to waiting for this now. After so long I’d rather it be epic rather than average if you see what I mean.

    • Yup I agree.
Easily one of my “most wanted” but I’d rather they’re happy with what they release rather than rushing it to appease a grumbling few.

  2. “We have the team working hard” I am happy with that ;) Hopefully the longer they spend on it the more better/epic it will be(like ico & SoTC where) :P

  3. I think moving it to a PS4 Launch title would be a very good idea, it would shift loads of new consoles. I really hope that is what they’re doing…

  4. I’m defo ready to see some next gen next year.

  5. I think PS4 for it would be a safe bet, i think Agent too, launching with an unbelivable first party line up would be a thing that sony would need.

I wouldnt be surpised if other exclusives like Verses XIII dont get switched over.

Sony look to have a strong lineup of first party and 3rd party games, so holding back for an EPIC launch lineup for there next gen maybe the smartest move they IMO.

  6. Releasing it for PS4 wouldn’t be too farfetched, if I recall Ico was originally supposed to be released on PSone. And that turned out fine in the end :)

  7. I reckon they’ve halted development on it and have just left it on the backburner, either for the PS4 or just for when the economic climate improves.

  8. I’m going to take this as good news.

  9. Its very poor that they show something of a game then YEARS later we are still yet to hear or see anything other than ‘nothing to report, we are working on it’.

Sure, get it right, but its almost sinful to do that to your consumer base.

    • Some games a manufactured. Some are created. This is the latter. It’s a vision that many fans are happy to wait until it feels right to release. Sure, we’re feeling impatient from time-to-time but it can genuinely wait if it means it’ll be for the better (both for us and them as a dev studio).

  10. So in English its going to be a PS4 title. Not great news for all those PS3 owners who don’t feel like forking out £400+ just to play a game that they have been following for the past few years.

    • Ico started development as a PS1 title but came out on the PS2. If The Last Guardian does the same (PS3 to PS4) we’ll cope! :)
