Final Fantasy XIV Beta Coming This Winter

To recap: Final Fantasy XIII was announced for both consoles along with Final Fantasy XIII Versus which would be exclusive to PlayStation 3 alongside Final Fantasy Agito XIII for mobile phones.

XIII arrived, XIII Versus vanished and the PC version of Final Fantasy XIV made its debut but was routinely described as being a bit pants.

Meanwhile, Final Fantasy XIII-2 was announced, then Square Enix decided XIV needed an overhaul which was dubbed XIV 2.0 and the PS3 version was put on hold whilst a new engine was built.

Final Fantasy Agito XIII dropped the Agito XIII and mobile phones, becoming Final Fantasy Type-0 for PlayStation Portable, scoring 39/40 from Famitsu.

XIII-2 was released and well received, whilst XIV 2.0  is currently being optimised, leaving Square Enix with 50% more work complete on XIV PS3.

XIII Versus remains MIA despite being announced in May 2006

If you followed that you deserve a medal and may be interested to know that a public beta for the PC and PS3 version of Final Fantasy XIV will launch sometime this winter.

I’m going for a lie down.

  1. I have no doubt this will be just as terrible as the original. I played it and it was literally just one big long chore.

  2. Versus, versus…..I want versus. Frick sake they even started development on next gen final fantasy games with the Luminous Studio engine

  3. Played FFXIV with a friend whenever it was free, its was alright. Interesting to see whats changed from 2.0.

    • Wouldn’t pay for it though, can’t afford to sub.

  4. Looking forward to see how it turns out on PS3 :)
    Roll on the beta!

  5. LOL., they are odd with how they handle game development. I think considering the other publishers in the market they could do CONSIDERABLY worse though, not reliably producing announced games is nothing compared to online passes, online-only DRM and over-pricing games.

  6. If you get one of those “first month free”, I will go for it, just for a taster.

  7. I was one of those who started when it was first released, Collectors Edition and all. I admit I gave it time but was disappointed. However I’ve been following it on and off, especially more so recently.

I like the look of how things have changed since the new guy came in and like the look of things to come. One of the biggest issues was the combat which is being completely overhauled. I will be giving the new beta a chance and will decide from there. Love how it looks though.

    • Same here. I wasn’t really disappointed because I compared it to FFXI, which was awesome but also had a rough start in Japan and was only released in the US after tweaking it for a whole year. I’m sure this will turn out fine. I probably won’t be able to play it, though. I just don’t have the free time to play enough to justify a monthly fee.

      • XIV just really didn’t have the charm of XI in my opinion. I also don’t enough free time now to justify paying monthly, for either game, otherwise I’d go back to XI in a heartbeat lol

  8. FF games are like buses….

    • They are always late, overcrowded and the driver sighs if you give them a tenner instead of a £2 coin for the fare?

  9. I’m pretty sure it’s too late for it Square as chances are people have either seen some 14 footage and have changed their mind or chose another MMO that is available on the PS3 after they apologised for cocking up 14 a few months after release. And when the developer and publisher apologise for their game, you know it is in trouble.

But i’ve not kept an eye on the MMO due to me not being a MMO guy so i would imagine that they have spent the past 2 years improving FF14 on the PC as well as implenting the changes to the PS3 version whilst they are coding it.

  10. Final Fantasy XIV was OK, only the goods were environments being beautiful and music is a top-notch ownage in that game, such as FF classics remixed or sound alike into a cool rock themes.
