Survey Claims Only 4% Of Wii Owners Bought A Game For It In The Last Year

A survey conducted by online retailer ShopTo claims that Nintendo are rapidly “losing out”, especially to mobile devices. Whilst 65% of the respondents to the email questionnaire owned a Wii, only four percent of them said they’d bought a game for it in the last twelve months.

“Gamers are changing their gaming device of choice with more getting their casual gaming fix from Android and iOS devices,” said ShopTo’s Igor Cipolletta. “We are seeing game sales on the Nintendo consoles losing out as the casual games market on portable devices continues to grow.”

The survey, which queried over nine thousand individuals, suggested most people owned four gaming devices; said that more than a third of gamers spent more time playing on their smart phones than consoles, and also averaged out the annual videogame spend in the UK, which came to £334.

  1. Well, that’s exactly why the Wii U is on the horizon. Nintendo is exactly where they want to be with their product cycle.

  2. I haven’t bought any Wii games for a long time (as far as I remember, the last game I bought was New Super Mario Bros Wii), mainly because the only games I actually want are first party Nintendo games and they just never seem to drop in price.

  3. It’s not surprising when the majority of the few big releases have been relatively niche RPG’s (very good though they are).

Barring Skyward Sword theres probably been very little to tempt the Wii’s casual gamers to part with their cash – and when they have the two Wii Sports games, Wii Fit and Mario Kart already why would they?

  4. Not surprising. It only sold as it was a cheaper alternative to PS3 and Xbox 360 but people have realised Wii is lame.

  5. My parents only ever bought wii fit, I guess people like them answered the survey.

  6. How odd… I never got the survey (or maybe it went to spam), I think I’ve picked up about 4-5 new releases past year for the Wii alone.
For those who own a Wii, you’re obviously not into RPGs then or are just plain missing out due to some weird elitist attitude.

  7. My Wii is very much the last thing I go to but I have bought games for it and Boom Street’s next on the list!!

  8. Most of the mid-life crisis Wii owners are probably laid up in hospital with injuries after doing their first ever physical exersise, and having nunchuck’s removed from their arses!
