DreamWorks Making Need For Speed Movie

DreamWorks has acquired the right to make a Need For Speed movie, it’s emerged.

George and John Gatins developed the original story with George writing the screenplay, the press release says, which also states that whilst the screenplay is based on the Need for Speed series, it is not based on an individual game.

“EA will produce the movie along with John Gatins and Mark Sourian,” continues the PR, “Scott Waugh (Act of Valor) is attached to direct, and the project will be fast-tracked at DreamWorks with a target production start date for early next year, for a 2014 release.”

Expect a “fast-paced, high-octane film” that is based on the car culture films of the 70s. “In Need for Speed,” apparently, “the cars are hot, the racing is intense and the story keeps players at the edge of their seat.”

“I’m excited about getting back into the creative trenches with John and George Gatins and my partners at EA to bring to life an exhilarating script based on an epic video game that seems to have been made for the movies,” said Steven Spielberg, DreamWorks Chairman.

  1. The absolute best this could be is like a bad Michael Bay film, surely?

    • Michael Bay makes very good car films. Just not very good cars that urn in to robot films.

      • Didn’t you like the first one TC?

      • Oh dear your one of those cynical fans aren’t you? I like what Bay did in some areas but the attrition rate in those films were too high. The first one is still clearly the best.

    • well after the huge deal they made about him having something to do with the trailer I doubt they’ll keep him in the dark with this one. Which is a shame because he’s one of the worst directors working today.

  2. Just sounds like “Fast & Furious: Retro” to me.

    • I’ll see it if Vin Diesel is involved. ‘I’m in your face!’

  3. Collaboration with Shrek?

  4. But I thought fast & furious was pretty much NFS :s

  5. could be good, if it’s anything like the Fast and Furious films i could see me enjoying it.

    fast cars, crashes.
    what can go wrong?

    uh, don’t answer that. o_O

  6. Any mention on whether this will be live action or animated? An animated film would be so terrible if it was.

    • Why would it be animated? You could just play the games! :D

    • i couldn’t see them doing this animated.

it’d probably be cheaper and easier to just do it for real with something like this.

    • Do Dreamworks do live action films? Can’t think of one i’ve seen of the top of my head. Probably missing something really obvious though.

      • Considering that when I typed in “Dreamworks Films List” into google, every results said Dreamworks Animated film list. I’m assuming no, they haven’t made a live action film before.

  7. That’s the recepie for a blockbuster right there….

  8. Out of all the games they could have chosen to make a film from, they choose Need for Speed… What about Mass Effect, Halo, Uncharted, Gears of War and Assassins Creed? All games that are vastly more interesting than Need for Speed.

It will be interesting to see how it turns out. I reckon it’s going to be a flop, could be wrong though.
