Left 4 Dead Running On PS Vita

Looks like PS Mobile is going to be a substantially powerful development suite.

YouTube user DigitalArts001 has got Valve’s Left 4 Dead running on his PS Vita via, by the looks of it, some kind of VNC link to a PC running the game via Steam.

As far as we can see this isn’t running natively at all, like some outlets are claiming, but it’s a clever move nonetheless, with the handheld acting as both controller and display.

Achieving more in the realm of Remote Play than Sony ever did, too.

  1. From the topic title I thought you meant it was running natively on the Vita – although it doesn’t look the case but still neat anyway.

  2. Impressive. That is what I want from my Vita. How did he get the motion sensing to work with the game? VNC would just map certain buttons to the keyboard, right? Is there a way to map the motion sensor to the mouse? I don’t think this would be possible natively. There would also be some noticeable input lag if VNC was used to display a video game remotely.
If some kind of remote connection was indeed established, did he use a custom firmware to run unsigned code? SO MANY QUESTIONS!

    • It’s running via PS Mobile.

      • Yeah, sorry. I skipped the first minute or so the first time. Lesson learned! :D

    • Ok, this time I didn’t skip ahaed and actually saw that he did indeed connect to a Windows PC to start the game.
Just checked the video description. He claims to make use of the Playstation Suite. If this is the stuff we can expect from PSS I’m one happy bunny. Imagine a Steam Vita app that lets you access and play your whole Steam catalog at home, streaming everything from your PC. Damnit, now I’m getting my hopes up…

      • Imagine if Valve and Sony partnered up to make that happen! It would mean a lot more Vita sales but there would surely be some limitations. Is the Vita’s hardware powerful enough to run a majority of PC games?

      • The Vita wouldn’t be running any of the games.

It’d be your PC doing it.

Just like how Gaikai and Onlive work their cloud gaming.

      • Sony will never approve such an app.

      • If it gets released as a homebrew app do you think many people will crack their Vitas?

      • I know I’d be streaming stuff from my PC. It’s just more convenient to play games like Limbo on a Vita than on a PC. Hell, I’d love to play Red Faction: Guerilla and Just Cause 2 remotely with my Vita.
I would probably hack my Vita to get Steam streaming working…
Just found another Youtube video showing FFX gameplay on a Vita through PSS. Do they have a Dev Vita or do you simply need the PSS Dev Kit to get it to work on your Vita? The Dev Kits aren’t that expensive if I remember correctly. I’d be willing to pay the fee to get stuff like this running on my Vita, as long as people share the code for it. I certainly wouldn’t be able to program it myself.

  3. Oh yeah, oops :P

Gaikai and Sony + Valve partnership it is then ;)

  4. Best co-op game ever.

    • if Valve bunged both Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2 on a disc for the ps3 – I’d probably be sectioned as my happy dance could be misconstrued as someone afflicted with St. Vitus or something

  5. Judging by the surprisingly low latency, I’d say he isn’t using VNC. I mean, he is running it on a PC and streaming the video obviously, but maybe he’s made his own server.

I’ve actually been curious about making a RemotePlay type system for a while, to get some use out of my crappy old netbook. It’s always annoyed me that these VNC type systems are pretty much useless for games. I wonder if you can get access to hardware accelerated x264 decompression using the PS Suite, since that would really help.

  6. Wkd

  7. The technical know how is way beyond me, but the fact that it can be done is fantastic.

  8. Just goes to show what should be done to support something that has somuch potential. Come on Sony pull your finger out your backside and start supporting your own product.
