Rather amusingly Microsoft have decided they own the number 45.
The BBC reports that they and many other sites including the Huffington Post, Techcrunch and AMC Theatres had pages targeted for removed from Google due to ‘copyright infringements’. It appears that an automated process which ‘which crawls the web for attempts to illegally share Microsoft content’ had decided Microsoft own the number 45 and requested the removal of hundreds of pages.
Another page listed for removal from the search engine was for a BBC CBeebies page which somehow includes copyrighted material regarding Windows 8 Beta.
The ’45’ is obviously a mistake, however reading further down the list reveals something rather odd…
Copyright claim #3:
Spec Ops The Line (XBOX360)
microsoft xbox games
Original work URL(s):
http://www.gamespot.com/spec-ops-the-line/
Microsoft then list a number of torrents and warez sites which have Spec Ops: The Line on offer. Obviously removing pirated material from the web is a good thing but why are Microsoft making a claim on behalf of 2K and using Gamespot as the source material?
Another example:
Copyright claim #26:
Risen 2 Dark Waters (XBOX360) (1)
microsoft xbox games
Original work URL(s):
http://uk.ign.com/games/risen-2-dark-waters/xbox-360-83951
Microsoft claiming copyright infringement on behalf of Deep Silver using IGN as source material.
