We’ve lost track of when The Last Guardian was first announced, it was so long ago. And, sadly, it doesn’t look like it’s going to be out any time soon. Speaking to French site JeuxVideo, Shuhei Yoshida, President of Sony’s Worldwide Studios for Sony Computer Entertainment, couldn’t even make the promise that the game will land in 2013.
“Can you confirm for our readers that the game will arrive well next year on PS3?” asked the site. “No, sorry, I can not say that,” came the reply, translated over at NeoGAF. “Because the last time we talked about a date for The Last Guardian, we finally disappointed many people. But I can tell you that the team is working hard on the project, including the engine. It is precisely because the teams working on the technical aspect of the game that we have nothing concrete to show you today.”
“So now I’m waiting for the right time to introduce you to The Last Guardian and speak with confidence of a release date.”
It’s been assumed for a little while, at least here at TSA, that the game will end up being a PS4 launch title, rather than landing on the system it was originally intended for. Team Ico have hit numerous development difficulties, and the exit of key staff has left a few wondering whether it’ll even make it out at all. It will, of course, but if it’s not next year then surely it’s next-gen…

Ah, trouble with the game’s engine, eh? That sounds like, especially this late in the cycle, that it really will be PS4. It strikes me as the “wait a moment, I have an idea” solution to the woes that has befallen it. Stunning animation, detail and environments means a stunning engine. Ueda probably doesn’t want his vision completely compromised and he may well have bitten off more than the PS3 can chew.

Sadly this game has fallen prey to the way the industry is now. With myriads of sites pumping out gaming ‘news’ to hoards of expectant and cynical gamers the margin for error, a game slipping or missing its original release date is so very small.
People are all to quick to hype something up, report every screen shot or create release dates from leaked game store inventory’s that we already think we know everything about a game before we have even read a preview or review. When something doesn’t make the intended date several other games are waiting to take our money and time and we quickly forgot about it.
Ico and the Shadow of the Colossus are games that took time to craft and where made in a time when we only knew about them because they made the font cover of OPSM. I think the Last Guardian will make it out, and I for one will buy it because games like this are very rare today buried underneath FPS and remakes of old games.
Because they got stung so badly last time i don’t blame them over been cagey about a release date or raising any expectations they cannot meet again (GT5 anyone!). The real shame here is that the gaming press have done a great job of killing this off before it even comes out. It will probably pass most people by like Ico and Shadow of the Colossus did until they got re-released or or jazzed up to HD. Even so it wont diminish what i am sure will be a great gaming experience especially if it manages to be sprinkled with the same love and attention that Ico and Shadow of the Colossus had.
Lets give it a chance before writing it off!

Maybe they don’t want to say it’s for next gen yet as Sony don’t officially have a next gen console in development.

Yup, agree with this.
Once PS4 is officially unveiled, they’ll probably make an announcement.

Problem is that if they do push it back to PS4 will they then be under pressure to do even more with the graphics and engine? That sort of pressure could mean it gets pushed back even more… I reckon 2015 is a safe bet, but with that delay will come a game to remember.

Imo it will probably be out in 2013 but he doesnt want to say any thing in case they f up again. Or its next gen.

Ps3 makes more financial sense.
