Sony Calls an End to PlayStation 2 Production in Japan

After nearly thirteen years, Sony has ceased production on what is arguably the most important console in history, the PlayStation 2. We mentioned this before New Year, but it might have been missed.

Sony has told retailers in Japan not to expect new shipments of the famous old console, so far no announcement has been made regarding the rest of the world. Is this the end of the PS2? Not quite, some developers will continue to release games for the platform – Final Fantasy: Seekers of Adoulin launches in March.

As you’d expect the best selling console in history – at 150+ million units, the PS2 boasts some rather astonishing stats. A console is nothing without great games and the PS2 kept players busy with a library almost 11,000 strong, selling 1.5 billion copies in total. Rockstar released the system’s best selling game, with Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas shifting a remarkable 17+ million copies.

It’s hard to breath in the games industry at the moment without someone making a connection to the next generation, but it has to be said – this does smack of Sony freeing up room for production of their next PlayStation system.

With the curtain finally starting to fall on the PlayStation 2, what’s your overriding memory of Sony’s greatest product?

  5. I remember getting mine in january/february by saving up my pocket money and the first video game I got was Tomb Raider The Angel of Darkness which I enjoyed very much. Now I got the systems best games like Half Life, DMC, FF X, X-2, XII along with XIII, GTA III, VC, SA, LCS, VCS with Outrun 2006 and my personal favourite Shadow of Memories, plus I have loads more as well .

  6. I’m amazed that nobody has yet mentioned the farcical pre-ordering system for the PS2! I still have my voucher and preorder reservation that shows I was one of the first people in Leicester to get one… Good times.

My favourite PS2 moment is still probably the good ol’ Solid Snake/Raiden switcheroo that Kojima pulled in MGS2. The whole game was amazing, but when I realised that the platinum hair’d one was a major protagonist it just blew my mind.

  7. Practically all my PS2 game boxes have little crumbs of skunk in them. Guess that kind of sums up the PS2 era of my life!

How many PS3 games have there been so far for comparison?

    • 800+ retail games have been released so far on the PS3. A result of bigger budgets and of course the fact it’s only been on the market for half the time.

      • Cheers! Interesting!

Then say maybe 400 PSN games on top?

11,000 is just insane! Is that the most for any console ever do you think?

    • Can anyone help me remember the name of this game?

Fairly sure it was an EA game and it was a sort of top down, group strategy/shooter. I think you played as a Russian revolutionary leader in the near future. Lots of the levels were in the snow and it was quite tricky. I seem to remember using the sewers as your base.

      Any ideas?

      • Found it. Was called Freedom Fighters.

My description was way off though! It wasn’t top down at all, and fairly obviously, the Russians were the baddies and you were, of course, an American. Oh, and it doesn’t look like much was in the snow at all, lol! It WAS an EA game though, hoorah!

      • And who said weed affects people’s attention span / memory?

      • Ha ha! Yeah, I sacked all that nonsense off years ago.

    • Yep it’s a record by far. Last I heard there were around 600 downloadable titles for the PS3.
