Fumito Ueda Confirms The Last Guardian Is Still In Development

Fumito Ueda, the man behind Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, has re-confirmed that despite him leaving Team Ico and Sony, The Last Guardian is still very much in development and that he’s still contributing as a freelance developer.

Via an update to his website posted just moments ago, Ueda says that “while it’s been a long time coming, The Last Guardian remains under [his] creative supervision and is still in development by an incredibly talented team.”

This squashes rumours that the game has been cancelled, although he doesn’t confirm that it’s still a PlayStation 3 title, something we’ve discussed before.

“I should also mention that details regarding The Last Guardians’s release is solely decided by Sony Computer Entertainment, not myself. Please keep an eye out for their official announcement.”

“Moving forward, it is my intent to continue my involvement with the project, as well as pursue new creative projects with a fresh perspective. As I rekindle my passions as a creator, I look forward to seeing where it will take me, and I deeply appreciate your support during this transition.”

  1. This is clearly ps5 launch game for sure lol

  2. Ueda, you’re such a tease! I wonder if the lack of footage last year means its a PS4 game now and it’s back under wraps until next Wednesday? *Gasp* New TLG trailer next Wednesday??!

  3. I knew it! I really hope i can get to play it on PS3.

  4. Surprised they are still working on this. The likes of DNF and Aliens CM have proven that development hell really does result in a poor game.

    • Agreed but Polyphony also showed us that turds can be polished. :-P

      • Blasphemy!
No, no I won’t be drawn in :$

      • It’s okay. Just teasing. I wanted to highlight the long development time with GT6 and how it still turned out okay. I’m just hoping that Ueda doesn’t throw his toys out of the cot at the very last minute and torch the Team Ico office to the ground. :-P

      • Yeah thought as much, still blasphemy though, it was buffed tod :O
The online certainly needed a thorough vacu-blast :P

  5. I can’t help but think the game is damned (by the press) whether we like it or not. Some of the cynical articles and snide comments will only help to taint the game’s release and cost precious sales.

I truly hope that it’s been a technical problem throughout so that Ueda’s vision is very much intact and that’s all they needed to overcome. If, however, he’s had a nervous breakdown and decided that all computer games smell, then we’re in for a rough ride. :-)

    • Where do you suppose do these snide comments and cynical articles come from? Disappointment. People are tired of playing the waiting game. Expectations have peaked and they will only drop over time. Truth is, what they showed years ago doesn’t necessarily have to be as exiting today as it was back then. Technology has advanced and chances are whatever they had planned isn’t as groundbreaking as it would have been when they teased the game.

  6. PS3 or PS4 i don’t mind as long as it comes out 1 day in the future :P

  7. It’s still in development, tis good enough for me. Unless it turns out to be another Duke Nukem Forever. Suspect it’s going to be a PS4 game as i personally think that the PS3 is not capable of doing what they want it to do thus them either porting all of their current work over to the PS4 or redoing it from scratch to take advantage of the PS4.

Or it’s going to be another GT5, where they keep delaying it because they want to add another feature, untill Sony get fed up and force them to release it. ;)

  8. There is a god!

  9. this works out great ether way imo PS3/PS4.
