Is This The PS4 Controller?

ps4 dev kit

According to Destructoid, this image has been floating around the internet today, although it appears to originate from their site. It’s impossible to say whether it’s the real thing or not, but chances are it’s either a sneaky photo of a PS4 dev kit (and controller) or an elaborate mock-up based on rumours.

Either way, that looks like a central touch pad, tweaked analog controllers and a coloured strip on the top, likely to be the Move strip that has also been rumoured recently. It also looks like it’s using a d-pad from a Vita, which is a good thing.

That thing in the back that looks like it’s from the 70s? Probably a development kit, the machine that developers are using to build their PS4 games – presumably the same innards as a real PS4 but obviously in a very different outer box. It looks like the controller has a tiny button near the touch pad – is that the (also rumoured) ‘Share’ button?

You can also see the cameras on the dev kit in the background.

So what’s new? In order, then, top row left to right are: a USB 3 port (it says 2 but that just means the second port); one of two cameras on the dev kit (but are likely to be mounted on a Kinect-like array); the ‘share’ or ‘option’ button and finally the PS button and what appears to be a speaker grill.

Bottom row is the touch pad; the Move strip (that’ll presumably change colour depending on the surroundings, like the Move stick); a redesigned analog stick (the d pad is also new and looks just like the one on the Vita) and finally what looks like a headphone jack underneath the PS button.

Note that – even if this is real (as Kotaku seem to think) – it’s still technically a prototype and the final design may well be totally different. Sony are expected to reveal the PS4 next week in New York, so we’ll likely find out for sure then.

  1. I quite like the design of those analogue sticks actually, a little ridge near the outer edge wouldn’t be a bad thing imo, as I find that if my fingers are particularly sweaty there is a tendency for them to slip off the sticks we currently have, and that could help to negate that issue. We’ll all likely know this time next week though…

    • What if they fill up with a little pool of thumbsweat?

      • I can see them getting very dirty. I reckon hard to control for a FPS too.

      • LOL…thumbsweat deserves a thumbs up!

  2. I was hoping(not that i believe this photo) that the ‘DS4’ pad would have a OLED PSVita like screen on it(a bit smaller of course) + That looks like a chap-ass NON-PlayStation Official Pad you can buy in Argos or from Amazon LoL:D

    • You are a professional on chap-ass? Good to know.

      • Can you get some chap-stick for that?

  3. Looks like a proto dev version, rather than any refined OEM item.
Like the sound of a move strip, touch screen I’m on the fence with.

  4. Excited so I am :-)

  5. I see they put something on top of the dev kit so you can’t see what’s going on inside.Probably 2 mice,a gerbil and 1 hamster,i was gonna say 2 gerbils but the price would be daft, something like £800 for a console.

    • Probably had most of them delivered to Richard Gere’s house.

  6. I like it. Will obviously come down to how it feels, but it looks good to me.

I love the idea of the share button I hope that is true.

  7. As Peter said on Twitter – those black boxes are with 99% certainly cameras. Ties it with the Move strip on the top.

      • I really hope the cameras will be external in the final product. If they stay mounted inside the console you will have to turn the PS4 in the direction you are sitting to utilize the functionality, or am I mistaken?
I sometimes hook up my PS3 in the bedroom and just sit the PS3 on the floor where any mounted cameras would be unable to see me. People would also be unable to set up their PS4 standing on one side.

      • Maybe they can be angled? But even so, it’s still not a perfect solution.

  8. I quite like the look of it, defo needs to be a tad slicker, though.

  9. Also, looking at that big ugly silver thing has me really excited! That is a PS4 :)

  10. I like how they haven’t drastically changed the layout, ‘don’t change what isn’t broken’. It looks a tad clunky but hopefully they’ll streamline it by the time it gets released. Not particularly interested in built in Move, Sixaxis wasn’t used that much, but its good that you won’t have to buy a different controller for Move enabled games.
