PS Vita Gets Price Cut, New Silver Colour

Sony has announced this morning that the PS Vita will get a considerable price cut in Japan, with the console down to Â¥19,980 from next week. That’s about £140. Interestingly, both the 3G and the Wi-fi models will be the same price. Let’s hope for a European cut too.

There’s also a new colour – Ice Silver, out on the 28th. On that day Japanese PS Vita owners can get a free week of PlayStation Plus, with some hefty PSN Store discounts during that same period.

In terms of game announcements, Toukiden will have cross platform play (PSP & PS Vita) and Valhalla Knights 3 will be released in May. It was a very Japan-centric event, with Gundam Breaker being a highlight and God Eater 2 will be much improved on the Vita.

  1. I did love the cross platfom stuff for the Vita and PSP! Nice move if your still holding back on the Vita. I got the impression that you downloaded and got a copy free going by the God Eater 2 video?

  2. Wow, is that the equivalent to what the 3DS got in Japan? I didn’t expect them cut it that heavily, fingers crossed it gets down to a similar price over here soon too.

    • I’m not sure, but I think that it is pretty easy for the to cut the price by that much in Japan. I think it costs them more to sell in the US and EU due distribution, taxes, and all that red tape nonsense.

Also it would be nice to see a Red and Blue Vita. Yum.

  3. Excellent. Hopefully this will turn it all around.

    • If, like many think, there is announcement on Wednesday of the Vita being big part of Sony’s vision with the PS4 it will certainly help.
Maybe Sony’s thinking it’s better to get folk to buy the Vita now as buying it at the same time as PS4 may be a bit much for most.

  4. I

    • Oh no I accidentally posted, my iPhone moved too quick for my fingers lol.

But anyway, I don’t regret my full price purchase, my vita gets love everyday, I have so many games that keep it turned on so that £300 on launch day was worth it!!

  5. The silver looks nice but I still prefer the Vita in black. I’d also like to see a price drop here so I can trade and get a 3G Vita for a cheaper price.

    • 3G ain’t worth it, I don’t remember the last I topped up my vita. Until they release a 4G model stick with the one you got.

      • Agreed south above post. I topped up to get WipEout 2048 but never have since. Maybe because I never got free game.

  6. Well, as always I should have waited for this to happen before I jumped the gun. Haven’t touched my Vita in ages and selling it now seems pointless.
If there is no deep integration between the Vita and the PS4 then I’ll be really disappointed.

    • I reckon there will certanly be fair degree of integration between PS4 and Vita – i’m just hoping it won’t be a case of needing Vita2 for full integration!

  7. That’s a huge price drop and should give Vita sales a boost in Japan. I hope the price drop goes global as more Vitas sold means more developers taking it seriously.

  8. Haven’t played on my Vita in ages. Crap games but I do want a silver one.

  9. Let’s hope it starts climbing those charts.

  10. Wonder if ¥19,980 includes relevant taxes, also cross-border currency conversions never translate because of other factors.

Does the Vita still have an RRP over here of £229 & £279? A similar 20% pricecut could translate quite well over here, given how much cheaper than RRP the Vita is already available for.

    • Actually I’d have to say the Vita’s price has been most subjective with retailers over here, with some selling for just under £200 from certain retailers. Whether the price cuts will make it over here though is another issue. With 3G models and wi-fi models being the same price, the wi-fi model will easily become obsolete. But then Japan have a greater use for stuff like Near and party, especially with God Eater 2.

I doubt it will be £140 here, more like £160-180 perhaps. If it does get cut, the less powerful (although still entertaining) 3DS will have a bit more competition I dare say.

I don’t care about price, I just want God Eater 2 and a bunch of new wave RPGs, not just the same old quest-based stuff that I have churned through countless times on PSP. Tiddle tum, a console is only as good as its games.

      • Gamestop were selling the wifi version with nfs for about 150 last month
