PlayStation 4 Releasing Holiday 2013

We don’t know a price yet. We haven’t seen the actual console yet. But we do know that it’s arriving before the end of this year in the holiday season – that’s November or December, then.

That puts the release date nicely in time for Christmas and it’ll hopefully release at the same time in all regions – they didn’t state otherwise, anyway.

It’s all looking very good – there’s a nice selection of games coming and the specs are very impressive, plus the new DualShock controller should add some new ways to play.

Your turn, Microsoft.

  1. This is great, but… I wanted to see it :(

    • Me too. I was hoping that they saved it until the very end.

  2. Still not convinced they won’t screw over Europe ’till 2014. Shortages gotta be a worry otherwise.

  3. Wanted to see the actual beast. Wonder what MS are going to do.

  4. £449.99 according to ShopTo, you can pre-order for £399.85 but it does say ‘subject to change’.

    • Already pre ordered mine!!

    • Complete guess work though. Don’t believe they know anything we don’t.

  5. Excellent preview event, but important questions were left unanswered, but I wasn’t expecting Sony to say, “oh, by the way. Pre-owned games. Not going to happen, and games on discs from retailers? No chance we have cloud!”

  6. It would have been nice to see the console itself, but overall I’m highly impressed. Excellent specs, some really genuinely good looking and unusual games (I’m really looking forward to The Witness), and Sony admitting to previous mistakes and correcting them.

The PS4 should be a real life saver for Sony – they’ve done something they’ve never done before, and realised that they need to produce a well-thought-out, high-spec, dev-friendly piece of kit that developers can actively code on. They’ve delivered big.

As an aside, you guys should go over to Kotaku and read some of the whiny bullshit that the “PC Elite” and MS fanboys are posting up. It’s depressing.

  7. I’m still holding on to the glimpse of hope that tells me they could release it here in Europe before 2014, too…

    • If the componentry is as off-the-peg as it seems, then there are going to be no bottlenecks for production. Remember, the only reason the PS3 had a staggered launch, was that the Blu-Ray drive had only one production line and low yields. Once things ramped up and other sites came on-stream, then yields – and prices – improved. Jeez, you can now buy a Blu-RW drive for £18…

So it’s for that reason that I think ALL 3 markets are going to see a 2013 launch. You can bet that trial production is going to start in a month or two. Actual production around July, giving plenty of time for launch stock to be assembled and shipping to get things in place for October / November.

Sony want to win this time round. Using PC architectures, no matter how exotic, gives them that production possibility. MS are using a similar architecture of course and there’s every chance they’re going for a universal launch as well, so we might even see a head to head launch. But I’m only concerning myself with Sony here and I think by announcing now, rather than waiting for E3, they’ve already got the head start in mind-share that they need. MS are going to have to blow the doors off with their announcement, but if they’re using similar specs, what are they going to do to claw back our attention? Kinect is a known quantity after all…

      • It would make sense but somehow the fact that they did not specifically mention that the PS4 will be out across all regions makes this a little bit suspicious. Maybe they are just keeping the door open if anything goes wrong. :P

  8. I wonder how microsoft is gonna counter all the gakai assisted features. Spectator, try before you buy and remote play seen as it’s patentented technology.

  9. I only watched it until half twelve, seeing probably an hours worth altogether so the streams did sort themselves out in the end. Waking up this morning to catch up, I can hardly believe that the machine itself wasn’t shown! That can’t be deliberate, something must have gone wrong in the meeting rooms. I feel like I don’t have anything to identify the announcement with, the controller doesn’t stick in my head as the defining feature of the console (although it is a good head turner), all I’m doing is trying to imagine how the box will look. I think they need to sort their issues out and get a picture out while everyone’s still talking about it, just to make the best of the hype buzz.

    • I’m the same, but I suspect I know what it’ll look like – a glossy slab of black plastic with some silver accents and maybe some transparent bits. This is Sony, after all.

    • Showcasing the console is probably reserved for this year`s E3.

    • Two reason… It’s far too early in the marketing build up to show the console, they can save that to ‘crash’ Microsoft’s event if they want, or obviously part of the E3 agenda.

Perhaps it isn’t ready yet, the bump to 8GB from 4GB was rumoured to be a reaction to the leak of the 8GB in Durango, this would say to me the design of the innards & importantly airflow isn’t final… so there is actually no box to show.

    • Someone from Sony jokingly said they wouldn’t have anything else to show if they showed the console now. When asked if they are going to show it during E3 he said they haven’t decided yet. I’d say either E3 or right around Microsofts unveilling event.

At first I was a little diappointed that we didn’t get to see the PS4 but then it hit me. We already know what’s inside and the rest is just a design question.

The same guy that I mentioned above stated that Sony thought it was critical to show the Controller because that is what you use to play everytime you turn on your PS4. The PS4 is just the device you turn on and off so it’s not as important to the consumer as the controller. I’m not quoting him directly, just paraphrasing what I’ve read.

  10. I can’t wait to get my hands on this. So excited. Will definetly pre-order nearer the releate date whether it be in 2013 or 2014. Thank you Sony and thank you TSA.
