PS4’s Dual Cameras Can Detect A Player’s Location Even Without Move or DualShock 4

According to details emerging from Japanese sources this morning, the PS4’s Dual Camera array will be used for more than just working out where a given DualShock 4 controller might be. Apparently, assuming correct translations, the camera block will be able to detect a user’s location in the room regardless of whether they’re holding a DualShock 4 or a Move controller.

That sounds like Kinect levels of tech.

Additionally, the PS4 also seems able to push out the Vita’s full native resolution for Remote Play titles, which should be the majority of PS4 games from launch onwards. Being able to play full PS4 titles on the Vita will be great, assuming Sony nail any lag problems – something Nintendo did well with the Wii U by dedicating a distinct Wi-fi system to doing just that.

Details are emerging on the PS4 continuously after last week’s New York reveal, and hopefully we’ll learn more as additional Japanese magazines get published.

  1. Regarding the Wii U: as far as I know, it isn’t possible to bring the pad with you outside the house (as in outside the range of the console) – or am I misinformed?

  2. Remote play GT6 on Vita, sounds good to me.

    • A rear view mirror would be nice.

  3. It’s an interesting play by Sony. They already have Move which is fantastic tech, and was designed such that improving the camera automatically improves fidelity without having to redesign the wands at all.

As an added bonus, improving the camera gives them Kinect like functionality when it’s required – which effectively negates Microsofts unique tech (and key marketing point for the past 18 months) in one foul swoop. Microsoft on the other hand doesn’t have a Move equivalent, and would now look incredibly contradictory if they implemented one.

To put it in perspective, gamers who spent money on Move for PS3 will see their investment roll directly into PS4 use at no added cost. Gamers who bought Kinect (including myself) will see their $199 robot eye become instantly redundant with the Terry.

    Nice move Sony.
