Sky To Be Xbox One’s UK TV Partner

Sky have been confirmed as the partner channel for Xbox One in the UK so that means you probably need to fork out for a subscription for TV on your Xbox One.

Microsoft Studios boss Phil Spencer told Edge – are you ready for this? Really? Sitting down? Whisky in hand? – “We have partnerships with Sky, with Canal+ in France, and we’ll continue to grow our international expansion.”

“We’ll put a worldwide face on the platform because Europe, in particular, is especially important to us this generation,” Phil continued.

NFL. ESPN. Basketball. American Football. All especially important to Europe. Did you even watch your own presentation Phil?

You’d think he would stop there, perhaps realising the European sized facepalm he had just made, but no. Fill up that Whisky glass because the next comment is a doozy.

“We want the world to watch television through this box,” he added.

Phil. Dear Phil. Lovely, lovely Phil.

EVERYONE ALREADY HAS A TELEVISION WHICH WORKS AS ‘A BOX TO WATCH TELEVISION‘ ON.

I think I need a lie down, this is making me ill.

  1. The pictures of Don Mattrick, Mr Smarm himself.

Ive got Sky+ HD box and heres the thing. Theres always a slight pause of a second or so whilst flicking through the channels, so why would I want to slow this down further but pratting about with a Kinect attached, which to be fair can only end in tears. You can imagine the Kinect, all of a sudden Skyping a friend or bringing up the Argos website all in the middle of a game or film, just because it misinterpreted some background noise. Like it does now. Frequently.

And these clowns have got the cheek to say theyre all gamers first and foremost. Yeah right.

  2. It’s like MS is doing everything wrong that Sony is doing right.

  3. ha ha ha ha, I have to laugh otherwise I will fall over in amazement at Microsofts complete an utter fuck up over this.

What are they trying to do? I’m sure most people who don’t read up on gaming etc will just look at it and think…..erm, is it free on my xbox because I can watch this on my tv anyway?

    Jesus Christ !

  4. So you have Sky, Sky is good, not cheap but good. And as stated above has a really nice UI. Then you plug it in to your new XBox One, lose the UI, get the option of waving like a moron at your TV, and all this for just several hundred pounds up front and a few extra pounds a month????

    Where do I sign up?

When Sony held their PS4 conference I was excited, and I really was looking forward to what Microsoft were going to strike back with. Shame. Oh, and on a related note my work have just switched to Windows 8. I have spent the entire morning bashing my face in to the monitor. I hate it. Really really hate it.

    So, a PS4 then……………. Yes, yes I will.

    • Go to Citizens Advice & tell them they’re making you use Windows 8. You’ll probably get compensation and free counseling paid by your employer not forgetting 3 months off work due to stress. You never know, your employer may even be given a prison sentence. lol

  5. When you include subscriptions for XBL and Sky, I can’t see anyone thinking this is a good deal.

  6. All press is good press, right? Hmm.

It’s nice to see Microsoft screw up for a change, but, even as a PlayStation gamer the negativity surrounding the X1 is sort of getting tedious.

There’s a lot of speculation going around, and nobody is really sure of anything at the moment, including, it seems, MS.

They’ve got a powerful and clever little box (well, massive box) which i’m sure is great, but their presentation has been poor.

I’m sure that when all these games are shown off, people will be back on board, and all of the trade in stuff will be considered normal, especially when Sony reveals that they have similar plans to Microsoft.

    • I know the negative things are getting tiresome, honestly I do, you’d think they’d stop, you would think someone in Microsoft would be screaming “EVERYONE! WE’VE FUCKED UP! SHUT UP! DO NOT SAY ANOTHER WORD TILL WE HAVE RETHOUGHT THIS!”

      But they just keep.
      on.
      coming.

      *headdesk*

      • I hope you didn’t see it as a personal attack, i enjoyed the article, i’m just talking about comments over every social network in existence.

Microsoft can, and will, sell a ton of these despite the initial hatred of everything Microsoft has said and done over the past few days.

Saying that, though, i’ll still remain on the PlayStation side.

I’ve got a picture that I think is quite funny, at the X1’s expense of course, but i’m not sure how to post it.

      • No no, I really do understand what you mean. I’d kill for some news about tit physics and doritos right now.

  7. “We want the world to watch TV through this box” Or prehaps people can just use a little invention called TV and just pay a monthly subscription to Sky which is cheaper. Nah, that’s is too far fetched. Thank god MS has come up with a way to watch TV. /Sarcasm

  8. Imagine if they have a deal that includes your broadband included, there would be nobody from UK in there lobbies. I had Sky BB until recently. I was getting upload of .6mb and download of 0.2 my ping was horrendous. Then went to Virgin and get a constant 30mb up 3mb down. Needless to say I’m not going back to sky even if I miss Sky Atlantic.

  9. I don’t think that MS are particularly interested in competing with Sony any more. It’s the likes of Apple and Google that they have their sights on now.

If they get casual users as well as gamers, even just in the US, then the machine will be more successful than the 360. It’s the services that they’ll make the money on more than the games.

They have shown their intent with the reveal, games are a secondary market for them now. They are targeting the rest of the entertainment industries.

    • You’ve got a point but they should be interested in competing with Sony. Whether its a multimedia box or a games console most purchases are going to boil down to “shall I get a PS4 or Xbox?”. Buying an iPad, iMac or Samsung etc isn’t going to stop people also buying an Xbox One but buying a PS4 is. (In most cases anyway)

    • they wont be able to compete with Google or Apple in television, especially going through Sky anyway. They have totally screwed up here and put people off, alot of people off.

They will sell a bucket load sure, but if reviews of the final product are anything like the current ones then it will be a miserable time for Microsoft.

  10. Microsoft did say that they viewed Apple as the competition, and I wrongly assumed we was going to be bombarded with a load of touch screen casul games.

Youve got to admire Microsofts optimism though. Theyre hoping to shift a billion units of Xbox One. I’ll take that bet and stake my right nut on the fact its going to flop like the Wii U.
