Microsoft Boss Claims Sony’s Tech Specs Are “Meaningless”

Sony have been up front and open about the PS4’s technical specs and components, especially when system architect Mark Cerny is doing the talking. However, Xbox One’s product planning boss Albert Penello has dismissed the numbers and details, classing them as “in some ways meaningless.”

“The problem is that Sony decided to go out and publish a bunch of numbers, which are in some ways meaningless,” he said. “Because this isn’t like 1990, when it was 16-bit versus 32-bit.”

“As a matter of fact,” he added, “they actually go out and they talk about how proud they are about their off-the-shelf parts. Our guys’ll say, we touched every single component in the box and everything there is tweaked for optimum performance.”

[drop2]General consensus is that the Xbox One isn’t quite as powerful, overall, as the PlayStation 4.

“For me, I’d rather not even have the conversation, because it’s not going to matter,” Penello continued. “The box is going to be awesome. The games are going to be awesome.”

“I heard this exact same argument last generation and it’s a pointless argument, because people are debating things which they don’t know about.”

“Why are we having this discussion?”

“You bought a system to play great games and have great experiences.” he says. “I feel like our games and experiences are going to be every bit as good, if not better, technically – on top of all the magic we’re going to add with the instant switching, and the power of the cloud.”

“So the whole numbers game – yeah, I’ve been following it online and it’s like, we tried having that argument last time. Do I want to talk about HDMI 1.3 or 1.4, it’s like ‘argh!’ It doesn’t matter. Did you see Call of Duty, it looks f**king awesome! It’s going to be great, you know. So we’re just saying, it’s not worth the debate.”

In some ways he’s right – it’s all about the games and until we see final versions of those (at that includes first party exclusives and the multiplatform games) the numbers don’t matter at all. The PS3’s Cell was hugely powerful, for example, but most early Xbox 360 games performed better.

  1. But have you seen Titanfall?
Yeah, old news and they’d be shouting their specs from the top of Mount Fuji if they had the upper hand. 5 gazillion transistors and the power if the cloud with better than anticipated eSRAM and all that…

  2. So he claims that technical specs are meaningless, and then argues that the XB1 will be great because it has “magic” and “the power of the cloud”? OK… Not sure I’m fully convinced by that.
But Call of Duty will look good. What else could you want? ;)

  3. its only a numbers war for people who care about numbers. The average kid doesn’t give a shit about numbers, I highly doubt some kid opening up presents christmas morning is going to see they got a brand new Xbox One and tell their parents to shove it up your ass because the PS4 has faster RAM. The average adult is going to be more cautious, but adults don’t give a shit either as they tend to look for a product that fits their needs within the budget. Its only fanboys who care, and its completely irresponsible for a corporation to encourage the behavior. Neither the Xbox One or PS4 are going to hit their maxed out potential until the Xbox -1 and the PS5 are ready to launch.
Personally I’d be more concerned with wich one is more committed to improving faster than which one is starting out stronger. Cause its a shame we have to wait 6 years for games that push a system to its limits.

  4. Hahaha can you imagine what MS would have spouted if the XB1 was more powerful then the PSPhwoar?

  5. As a matter of fact,” he added, “they actually go out and they talk about how proud they are about their off-the-shelf parts. Our guys’ll say, we touched every single component in the box and everything there is tweaked for optimum performance.”

how disrespectful is that!!! comments like that put me right of MS. like Sony just went round chucking stuff in a basket. why don’t they release there specs if there not a issue?

    • Maybe hes referring to the MS tech guy’s fetish for touching shiny objects?

  6. All that matter is our games will be Awesome with Awesome sauce with connecty-ness and Kinetic-yness and those are not meaningless words!

  7. So the Xbox One is powered by magic? How will Sony compete?!?!

    • 1) haha
      2) of course with games :)

who needs money if there’s magic, right ? haha..
