EA are going to raise the costs of gaming next generation, perhaps unsurprisingly, with the RRP of their titles jumping a fiver to £54.99. Others may follow.
The news comes via retailer GAME, who say that the publisher has confirmed costs of their next-gen games, “attaching a price of £54.99.”
“No other game prices have been confirmed,” says a FAQ on their site. “We will of course update our listings as and when this happens. And if the price changes before release day, you will always pay the lowest price.”
Hopefully deals will still float around on the high street, and it’s highly unlikely that online retailers will ever move towards selling at full RRP unless they have to.

Ouch! That’s quite an increase. Have played it safe and put my pre order down for BF4 on Shopto (£48) just in case they increase it closer to launch. Crazy money. Can safely say I won’t be buying many games next gen.

Well EA you’ve driven me to pre owned games now….

So EA have raised the price for no reason. They will wonder why they have less sales and probably release more day 1 DLC or cut content as DLC or both and see the rise of preowned sales of their games.

To be honest, RRP (at least in the UK) means squat. Anyone ever paid more than £40, or £43 if you shop at Game, for a new release?
And, at the risk of being lynched maybe it’s justified? New games have been at the £40 mark for a long time now, perhaps a couple of quid more per title is reasonable?

I agree. If the price goes up by 10 percent over a course of 7 years then I think we are doing quite well.

Good thing I didn’t like the look of any EA games at E3.

So, Next Gen then….
Sony want me to pay for online play, MS for a camera and crap that goes with it i never wanted and now E.A want an extra £5 per game….
And people were saying Next Gen could’nt come quickly enough?.

I saved up as a tyke and bought street fighter 2 turbo for the SNES. It cost £79.99 as standard and £99.99 in the special edition tin. So on reflection games are still fairly well priced. If all devs follow suit this price hike may be forgotten (EA being the first) If not, EA pushing it may harm them after the green team back tracked? robbing peter to pay paul spring to mind. Thankfully and to be fair all I’ve bought by them brand new has been the Dead Space Trilogy and Mass Effect 2 and 3. So I can and will avoid most of their titles.

Higher prices just means i’ll wait for the prices to drop or pick up 2nd hand games, plus i’ve not bought any EA games new for a while now as they’ve been either a bit crap or overpriced at retail for me to take a punt on anything.

Personally I’d be more concerned about GAME trying to raise their prices to the publisher RRP – even this gen, the prices pubs recommend are always higher than what you see in the shops – are Game trying to shirk responsibility for their own pricing?

Prices need to go down not up! This is why I’m glad renting will still be available next gen. That’s all I do now and it’s working for me. $10 a month, as many games as I can play, and for 2 games at a time.
The gaming industry is becoming a dangerous Hollywood.
