Ryse: “Anyone Can Play And Mash The Buttons And Fight”

Crytek’s Xbox One launch title Ryse: Son of Rome, will let players simply mash the buttons to win, which is an interesting idea to say the least. That’s according to design director PJ Estevez speaking to GameReactor recently, who says the studio have “this concept we call mashing to mastery” – you can just hammer buttons and still get through the game, even the wrong ones in the QTE sections.

“The idea is that anyone can play it and they can mash the buttons and fight,” he says, “but if you get the right timing you’re able to actually master it. Master the reaction you get out of the AI. You worked on the AI, you get them to this executable state and you execute them and we’re like: ‘Why does it have to stop there?’ ‘Why do I have to stop and watch this movie play out?’.”

“Because we’ve all played games that have executions,” he continues, presumably referring to titles like God of War, “and like 30 minutes into them you’re like ‘Really, I smash this guys head, then I stab then I kick him.’ So we’re like, well, let’s continue the flow, let’s make it open up a window and let’s give guys who want to spend time learning it more of a reward bonus.”

Quite.

  1. I have to say this game does interest me for the roman setting. Love the romans, such an underused world in videogames

  2. This and Forza seem like the only games of interest to me on x one. Not even titanfall interests me. Now it’s just down to forza. So it’s definite nail in coffin x one on release day and maybe 12 after.

  3. I guess that’s what happens when you try to convert a Kinect-conceived game into a console experience.

  4. More button mashing than GOW..? That sounds awful.
