Yesterday’s Fantastic GTA V Trailer Footage Was Captured From PS3

You watched it, didn’t you? I know there has been quite a lot of eye-rolling and sighing from jaded videogame enthusiasts (not least myself…) with every little incremental drip of information about Grand Theft Auto V but we all watched that trailer yesterday. It was, to use the fashionable term, epic.

I had a very brief conversation yesterday with a friend and we basically concluded that we thought Rockstar were big fat liars. There’s no way that footage (and those mountains!) – keeping in mind it’s a huge open world – was based on current console hardware. So that, coupled with the now-removed job listing for PC graphics programmers, led us to speculate that this was running on a decent PC, with next gen console versions a shoe-in. Well, Rockstar says we’re too quick to judge.

The prodigious developer has taken to their blog to categorically confirm that the footage in yesterday’s lengthy trailer was all captured from the PlayStation 3. The quick post has over 4,500 comments on it at time of writing, with most of the relevant comments basically going “SRSLY? WOW” and similar sentiments expressed in a similarly internet fashion.

It is impressive, though, isn’t it? It looks like, with GTA V, GT6, Beyond, and the rest, PlayStation 3’s great year might be the biggest challenge to PlayStation 4’s launch this holiday season.

  1. I have plenty of stock in my Bawsaq.

    • Oh if only we still had comment of the week, this would get my vote.

  2. So again, they’ve said something, yet nothing….

No mention of what if any form of enhancement done to the ‘captured footage’ i.e any filters applied? any form of upscaling? and no a word on how they’ve overcome the previous issues they’ve had on PS3 hardware.

Just how have they adressed the split Ram issue this time around? yes, you’ve an 8G instal which will help performance in some areas, by why are’nt Rockstar telling us anything about how such improved performance has been achived?.

    • I would’ve thought because most of that interests very few folk and this isn’t the place for tech-spec details other than the platform it’s running on. However, the more hardcore (and in-the-know) gamer such as yourself will want answers galore. Hopefully they’re forthcoming very soon. :-)

  3. Wow, I don’t believe it, okay maybe a little bit… maybe. I’m sure this news will boost preorders but there’s bound to still be skeptics around. I’m gonna need a bit more convincing I think, but whatever machine it’s running on there it looks excellent!

  4. The only thing that leaves me sad is that even when we get three, THREE, main characters, not one of them is a woman. Feels like they missed a trick there.

    • It’s a fair point. This will be 7 protagonists now (if you don’t count the episodes) and still all male.
One of these three should have been a woman

  5. I thought it might be console footage, considering it’s only announced for console yet and they’ve only just advertised for someone to work on the pc version.
Still impressive though – and i loaded up GTAIV last night for a reference – Rockstar seem to have figured out the PS3 much better this time around.
