Bethesda Not Developing For Wii U Due To Hardware Issues

You won’t be seeing any of Bethesda’s upcoming games on Nintendo’s latest home console – at least not for the time being. At QuakeCon, speaking to Joystiq, their VP of PR & Marketing Pete Hines said:

“None of the game’s we’ve announced are being developed for the Wii U, so it’s guaranteed that none of those games are coming to Wii U,” before going on to say “Will any future ones come out? I can’t say for sure, in our near-term focus it’s not on our radar.”

So that means we shouldn’t expect Wii U versions of The Elder Scrolls Online, Wolfenstein: The New Order or The Evil Within. The reason? “It’s largely a hardware thing,” continues Hines, following up with their aim to “make the games that we want to make, on whatever platforms will support them as developed.”

He then cites the Xbox 360’s hardware limitations as a reason that The Elder Scrolls Online won’t be appearing on that console, saying that it “just wasn’t possible,” though it “it remains to be seen what the future holds” in regard to the Wii U.

It’s a different story from the usual about the Wii U having poor sales, then, with publishers such as EA skipping the Wii U due to its low install base and Ubisoft making the previously exclusive Rayman Legends available on other platforms due to the fact it wouldn’t sell well on the system.

  1. Why do Bethesda always have so many problems? Always blaming ‘hardware limitations’ too!

    • Bethesda don’t have the best reputation with development (and handling hardware) but a huge factor has to be the fact that a PS4, X1 and decently powerful PC will be very easy to develop for – with minimal tweaking across the platforms. They then turn to the Wii U and think “ah, that’s a massive downscale as well as a troubled console with bad poor sales”.

Mind you, tactical, it could just be about the install base and that’s it. :-\

  2. That’s a shame, the Wii U gamepad would be a very fitting PIP-boy in a Fallout game.

  3. They couldn’t get all the bugs and glitches to work as they should on the hardware.

  4. Are the ‘hardware issues’ a lack of hardware sold?

  5. Haven’t Bethesda games always been abysmal and bug ridden on the PS3? They seemed to be much more stable on PC and 360. Nothing but complaints about the Fallout series on PS3. I loved Fallout 3 on the PC but never bothered with the PS3 version due to all the issues reported.
