Rockstar Turned Down Grand Theft Auto Movie “Many Times”

Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser seems to have given interviews  to every publication he can this week, the latest being movie magazine Empire.

He has revealed that the prospects of a Grand Theft Auto movie have arisen many times but they have been universally dismissed.

“We’ve been offered, many times, and it’s never appealed,” said Dan. “The money’s never been close to be worth risking one’s crown jewels. Our small dabblings with Hollywood have always left us running back to games. The freedom we have to do what we want creatively is of enormous value.”

“There’s still plenty of kudos in doing a film, but you shouldn’t ever do anything in your life for kudos. It’s much easier to imagine GTA as a TV series, as the form is closer, but I still think we’d be losing too much to ever actually do it. We’ve got this big open-world experience that’s 100 hours long, and that gives players control over what they do, what they see, and how they see it.”

He also cites the huge range of activities available in the games as another reason why the movie has never been made and suggests that Rockstar stick to what they do best.

“We love games and we think we’ve got something to say in games, and that games have plenty to say. So shouldn’t we just continue doing that?”

Grand Theft Auto is out, as if I need to tell you, on September 17th. Empire notes that there are no big movie releases that week – I wonder why?

  1. Phew! Stick to your guns Rockstar!

  2. GTA is a game, it doesn’t need to be anything else. Unless there was something revolutionary in GTA that could only fit a media other than games I don’t see any point in doing so. Can’t wait for GTA V, although I’ll need to buy The last of Us first…

  3. Wasn’t Grand Theft Auto a movie from the 70s/80s already?

I vaguely remember something like the movie poster resembling the GTA 1 box art?! Maybe I dreamt it…

    • ‘Ron Howard’s funnier and faster. He’s a high speed disaster’ goes the tagline. IMDB says 5.2 / 10. Nuff said!

  4. Nice to see Rockstar has standards,i think films based on games should be animated in the future.Animation seems to convey the story much better than films do.
