Hopefully you’ll all be able to play GTA Online smoothly over the weekend, as Rockstar are set to release another update for the game – to help fix issues preventing players from progressing past the tutorial and to stop the game from deleting characters, presumably.
The patch will be hitting both PS3 and Xbox 360, and Rockstar “hope to have it out for download as soon as tomorrow”, they announced via an update to the post discussing the issues on their newswire.
We’ll keep you updated with what the patch actually addresses – have any of you managed to sink some time into GTA Online without losing your progress or being booted out?

About time. Got on last night after 2 evenings of trying which is crap only to have my character deleted when I returned after eating. An absolute bollock of a release for this in my opinion. They probably should have realised that everyone and their mother would be trying to get online on its release as most will be far into/finished with the story.
So yeah, now I’ve got to start again and mess around with the intro, first mission and all that BS for the 3rd time.

I am most concerned that people have been reporting borked saves from online messing up – Until that particular thing is addressed, i won’t be going near it.
As i mentioned to R1M last night, connectivity problems are one thing, but messed up saves are summat else!

I had a few attempts to get in on first few day of online, it did actually mess up my one and only quick save slot. In story mode it wouldnt let me switch characters! luckily I had an autosave from the previous mission which I loaded and I could then switch chars again, phew. I was very close to end of story missions also, so could have been a big deal for me.
I have found that I can play online though, If I start up story line, then go into menu and select online, solo play. this generally lets me play, albeit on my own which kinda defeats the point. But alas, my created char almost always seems to get deleted when I go back in, so hoping this patch resolves that issue at least.

Before you install the update I can’t recommend enough backing up your current GTAV gamesave to PS+ cloud or preferably USB memory stick just as a precaution. I’ve been making regular backups from day one.

@BM That was aimed more at people who have progressed through the single player campaign with a lot of career progress loss to be had should anything go tits up while updating with the new patch and firing corrupted bullets at the gamesave. Still good practice for anyone though even starting out knowing the games savedata handling irregularities in the recent past.

4GB USB memory stick – sold just about anywhere these days for around five quid.

Well whether it’s related or not I’m not sure; GTA V’s been the only game to crash on me for a while, and I’ve not seen a filesystem restore dialog on my console for over a year, but my machine hard crashed when installing the new patch and F*’d the HDD. Forced into formatting (filesystem restore failed repeatedly at 21%), & now restoring a six-month old backup so it’s not so bad – I’m just hoping I can bulk-download all my saves from the cloud.
Coincidence? Possibly; but I think I’m done with GTA V / R*.

Looks like it was just as well i’ve been away for a few days and unable to go online. Think i’ll hold off until things are sounding a bit more confident.
