Mad Catz has decided to enter the console market with their own machine called the M.O.J.O, and Android based machine which looks to take on the OUYA, the NVIDIA Shield, and the rumoured Amazon console. The technical specifications of the M.O.J.O are:
- Android OS 4.2.2 (Jelly Bean)
- NVIDIA Tegra 4 T4OS 1.8 GHz Processor
- 2GB RAM
- 16GB internal storage though can support up to 128GB microSD cards
- 1080p HD output resolution
- USB 3.0 and 2.0 ports
- Bluetooth v2.1 + 4.0 support
- 100 Mbit ethernet port
The M.O.J.O will be another console that will run apps and games from the Google Play Store, as well as the Amazon App Store and NVIDIA Tegrazone. The option to purchase from other store fronts will also be available. It will also support streaming services such as Netflix. There’s also mention PC games though it isn’t made clear whether that means streaming from a PC to the M.O.J.O.
The console won’t be cheap though retailing at a price of £219.99 and releasing pretty soon after the next gen in December this year. Personally I’m not sure if this is a wise move by Mad Catz, with the cheaper OUYA not being the huge hit the company was hoping for, and with a price that is around the same as the Wii U this may not take off. Even PS3s and Xbox 360s are available for that price, so the sales figures post launch will definitely be interesting reading.

Doesn’t sound like a cheap alternative, compared to the Ouya etc.I think that like with MP3 players, the Android-console market is going to eventually be flooded with lot’s of cheap Chinese knock-offs anyway.

Problem I have with these android consoles is the android firmware is regularly updated & if it can’t be upgraded on the console it’ll soon be out of date.
And that price is way too much.

Because it may have to be tailored to the device. I had an android phone which only had 1 update for it then they stopped supporting it. Then all the apps made for the newer firmware weren’t available for it.

Firmware updates aren’t that much of a problem on the OUYA as long as games stay compatible with the version you are running. Devs probably don’t want to lock out a huge chunk of potential buyers and even then the OUYA has their own store so the game devs either make the game compatible or the OUYA team is inclined to keep their firmware compatible with the games so they can continue to receive support.
When I read the spec list of the M.O.J.O. I thought it could easily kill the OUYA with that TEGRA 4 chip but at the price it’s just going to die a quick death. Hell, even with a TEGRA 4 I wouldn’t know what do with the performance. I haven’t seen a game that required so much processing power. The only benefit I could see would be better performance of N64 and PSX emulators…
A 100€ (150€ tops) price point is essential for such niche devices.
Anything beyond that and you can get 3DSs, Vitas and other consoles. You are not missing out on much anyways since your average smartphone already has these games available.

it’ll be easier to list companies that don’t have an Android based console soon. o_O
anyway, considering it’s like twice the price of the Ouya i have my doubt about this being much of a success
and plenty of Android devices allow you to connect joypads these days, so, that’s probably it’s only selling point nullified, because any halfway decent Android tablet has a HDMI out.
