Forza 4’s Autovitsa cars were a secret prototype for Forza 5.

“So in Autovista in Forza Motorsport 4 there were 26 cars, and those cars, in many ways, were prototypes for what we wanted cars to look like on next gen hardware,” explained Turn 10′s Dan Greenawalt.

“The thing we learned in doing that experiment was that we didn’t think the next generation was about poly count and texture resolution. It was gonna be about light and atmosphere and imperfections so we actually got to ship a prototype – which was kind of cool.”

“Now obviously we didn’t tell people that – that’s not how we framed it – but I thought that was a cool experience. Autovista was a very cool experience and that carried forwards in Forza 5. We were prototyping ideas.”

Forza 5 will also feature “The Stig’s Digital Cousin”.

Masahiro Sakurai, creator of Kirby, has criticised the industry’s reliance on sequels and re-use of characters.

“Is there any industry that relies so much on reusing and reusing their old titles as much as video games?” he asked. “Compared to other media like movies, dramas, animation, novels and comics, the glut of franchises and remakes is at an unnatural level.”

  1. Please never ever stop doing the obvious news thing Tuffcub. Never fails to raise a smile on my dinner break!

  2. Ps Super excited for pvz2 on Android. Been waiting ages for it.

  3. Boo Plants Vs Zombies isn’t out in the UK yet on that link. Hopefully it will be by the end of the week.

  4. 1 sale increasing to 700 would be a 69900% increase.

    Just sayin.

    • Shush. I was busy.

    • I was just thinking that. A 700% means they sold eight of them! :-) I think. :-)

  5. Ah John Lewis who still think they can sell a vita bundle with Uncharted for over £200 and currently have a facebook thread asking for PS4 launch details from customers going back to June with still no detail. They are clueless about video games.

As for too many sequels and re-using characters, it’s a bit rich coming from a guy making a smash-bros game. The cost involved is too high not to reuse characters in games. It’s not like you can go and pay for an off the shelf video game equivalent of Will Smith or Tom Cruise who can sell a game for you. Maybe they should. Naughty Dog could contract out Drake assets with Nolan North to other developers like an agent gets actors contracts.

The “blockbuster” video game costs are so high now that it’s only natural that developers want to reuse assets to cut costs and publishers want sequels to reduce risk. Beyond has highlighted a potential future where big names actors are brought in to help with both the acting side and selling the game.

    • There is an idea of bridging film and ‘interactive entertainment together’ with like Jodie Holmes (Beyond) starring in other games with different stipulations.

  6. The irony of Sakurai complaining about sequels when he’s working on another Super Smash Bros is almost unbearable. I don’t know whether to laugh or cry! And the fact Nintendo only seem to release games centred around their characters from 5th gen consoles is hilarious.
