WeView Verdict: The Last Of Us

The Last Of Us encouraged a lot more of you to contribute to this week’s WeView. The majority of comments had nothing but praise for the latest offering from Naughty Dog, however, a few of you weren’t that impressed and failed to see how the game generated so much hype.

So let’s kick things off with the negative viewpoints. Parker94 gave credit for the “beautiful landscapes and scenery” but felt the story “began to drag” and they “lost interest”. Wonkey-willy was more critical of The Last Of Us saying it’s “basically a ten hour interactive movie” that “gets a bit predictable” and concluded that “it’s good but not really genre breaking”. Agreeing with this opinion was Forrest_01 who simply said he “thought it was a boring piece of crap”, which is probably my favourite comment this week for its brutal honesty!

This is really where the negatives stop for The Last Of Us. “Beautiful, haunting, atmospheric, touching, suspenseful, captivating” were the words Scythegpd used to describe the game, claiming it was a “masterpiece”. DoomsDay619 felt The Last Of Us was “one of the greatest games this generation”, an opinion which was very much present throughout most the comments.

One of the best aspects of The Last Of Us was the relationship between Joel and Ellie. 3shirts said “The way the characters grow together and go through everything is beautifully paced” and that the “careful scene setting lets you really feel the panic and tragedy that befell the people who are long since gone”.

Double-o-dave said this relationship was “one of the main reasons as to why this game is great”. PoorPaddy89 compared Ellie and Joel’s interaction to that of Booker and Elizabeth’s in BioShock Infinte saying the “relationship between the two lead characters is brilliant, equalling if not surpassing that of BioShock Infinite”.

Cam_manutd was another fan of The Last Of Us and said the “game succeeds on many levels” from the “visual (and) game design” to the “brilliant sounds from gunshot echoes to the different pitched noises of the infected.”I must admit I found the noise of the clickers quite haunting.

The Last Of Us featured quite an extensive multiplayer section. Giving a detailed account of this was Youles who said the in the multiplayer “balancing was good for the most part” and that “the survivor system for progressing/levelling-up also was a nice change to the usual Prestige nonsense”. He added “the lack of ammo also meant the MP wasn’t too frantic or shootie, it kept a “survivor” feel to it”.

To finish off this week’s WeView are two comments which really stood out for me. The first comment comes from boyinastairwell who said:

I understand it’s not everyone’s cup if tea but it reminded me of playing Metal Gear Solid on the Playstation; it’s a game that feels new (even if the mechanics and basic story have been seen before) and the characters are so well realised that you can’t help but feel attached to them.

Last but not least was Mundham’s short and sweet comment which really showed how far gaming has come in the past few years.

The game had an emotional resonance that few games have ever reached (FF7 and Journey being it’s only peers in my 30 years of gaming).

Now it’s down to the all important votes. With only one vote was Avoid It, followed by Bargain Bin It with two votes and Rent It with four. However, the winner was Buy It with a landslide victory of 28 votes. The Last Of Us is certainly worth a purchase!

On the complete other end of the spectrum, we have LittleBigPlanet Karting for WeView tomorrow, and a couple of new additions to the poll along with Resistance: Burning Skies and Animal Crossing: New Leaf in the form of Remember Me and Gears of War: Judgement. So get voting!

  1. LBP Karting is only a fiver in Sainsburys, so will be interested in seeing how it does!

  2. Game of this Generation????
Hell NO. why is this game so over hyped? cuz it has a uber great story?
The game wasnt anything new. Take away the cut scenes & then ask yourself that question. The Story of a duo of characters should not overshadow the gameplay, thats why we have movies ! This ggame was different from Uncharted , how? oh , thats right …… The Story

    • You should have commented last week :)

The gameplay is completely different from – and much worse than – Uncharted, in my opinion. There are much better games in gaming, but not many better stories!

      • I think the gameplay suited it though, it needed to be a bit slow and clunky to give a sense of urgency or panic when suddenly faced with Clickers or something.

    • So you’re saying the gameplay in Uncharted is the same as the gameplay in TLoU?
Have you even played either of those games?

Yeah I totally remember clambering around like a gymnast and shooting enemies while hanging off stuff in TLoU. And the rolling shooting dives and near unlimited ammo.

Sorry, you may not like the game, and that’s entirely your right. But to imply it plays the same as Uncharted is ignorant.

Add to that what is YOUR game of the year? And, considering your criticism, it better play completely different to any game that’s come before (bang goes GTA, Skyrim, Bioshock, Gears … actually pretty much everything apart from a few niche indies).

  3. For a Zombie game that really looks good fun, you should all check out Dying Light. Not sure the story will be anything special though.

  4. A lot of people would probably disagree with me, but I thought the game was near perfect, one of my favourite games of all time. The story was absolutely fantastic and I thought the gameplay suited it well, I really felt like a survivor by using stealth, scavenging for supplies etc. What really did it for me though was the build up of Joel and Ellie’s relationship and the amazing prologue. Few games have managed to move me to tears, but The Last of Us did in the first 10 minutes of playing. While the gameplay is really fun, what makes it stand out from other games with better gameplay is its combination with the story. That is what makes The Last of Us a powerfully driven, unique game which deserves every bit of praise it gets. That being said, I can see that it’s not suited to everyone as some people prefer gameplay over narrative (which is the game’s focal point). However, I can still say without a doubt that its one of the best games I have ever played!

  5. I thought it was a great game. Not my favourite ever but potentially top 10. Definitely had an impact. I agree with the people above who said it really did make you feel like a survivor. All guns blazing just did not work with clickers!
