As well as games, the PS4 will feature a host of entertainment apps, including video, music and sports content. While it’s still up in the air whether these apps will make it to the UK at launch – with many including Netflix confirming that their app wouldn’t – Sony have confirmed which of these will be available at the US launch of the PS4, in just over a week.
Firstly, there’s obviously Sony’s own Music Unlimited service, which offers 22 million cloud-based streaming songs and Video Unlimited, which offers on-demand movies and TV shows from hundreds of studios and networks.
On November 15th, you’ll be able to use these apps if you aren’t spending all your time playing games:
- Amazon Instant Video – Buy, rent or subscribe to stream movies and TV shows.
- Crackle – A freely accessible television network offering a variety of genres.
- Crunchyroll – A Japanese anime streaming service.
- EPIX – 3000 streaming movies including Avengers and The Hunger Games.
- Hulu Plus – Unlimited streaming of shows such as Family Guy and The Simpsons.
- NBA Game Time – Live NBA action, stats and schedules with subscription.
- Netflix – Instant streaming of movies and TV shows, including original series.
- NHL GameCentre LIVE – Stream live out-of-market games with subscription.
- Redbox Instant – Stream hit movies and receive 4 monthly DVD and Blu-ray rentals.
- VUDU – World largest selection of movies and TV shows before DVD release.
- YuppTV – 150 live Indian channels on demand.
Phew, that’s a lot of stuff. There might be an uproar if the UK launch offers a lot less in terms of these entertainment apps, which it seems like it’s going to. Still, we’ve got our PS3s for a bit, and I only really need Netflix anyway.

Does it play games? Yes. Couldn’t give a sh@t about the other sh@t. I’ve never watched netflix or any of that chuff through my PS3 and won’t be doing so on the PS4. Give me some big bang, bang, bang, games, a bit of cross game chat and some shiny and I’m happy. If I want to watch some telly I’ll grab the TV remote control and select HDMI 1.
Just a thought but… If most of these streaming apps on console game machines are revenue streams then why not open up a hard core porn channel? Be the first to market and make a mint. Might be a little tricky to use in the living room in front of the whole family though… depends on your personal family standards I guess. Anyway, I reckon I’m drunk posting again this evening and I will now bid you a fond farewell for the day. Good day all, good day.
