Sony Confirms Which PS4 Entertainment Apps Will Be Available At The US Launch

As well as games, the PS4 will feature a host of entertainment apps, including video, music and sports content. While it’s still up in the air whether these apps will make it to the UK at launch – with many including Netflix confirming that their app wouldn’t – Sony have confirmed which of these will be available at the US launch of the PS4, in just over a week.

Firstly, there’s obviously Sony’s own Music Unlimited service, which offers 22 million cloud-based streaming songs and Video Unlimited, which offers on-demand movies and TV shows from hundreds of studios and networks.

On November 15th, you’ll be able to use these apps if you aren’t spending all your time playing games:

  • Amazon Instant Video – Buy, rent or subscribe to stream movies and TV shows.
  • Crackle – A freely accessible television network offering a variety of genres.
  • Crunchyroll – A Japanese anime streaming service.
  • EPIX – 3000 streaming movies including Avengers and The Hunger Games.
  • Hulu Plus – Unlimited streaming of shows such as Family Guy and The Simpsons.
  • NBA Game Time – Live NBA action, stats and schedules with subscription.
  • Netflix – Instant streaming of movies and TV shows, including original series.
  • NHL GameCentre LIVE – Stream live out-of-market games with subscription.
  • Redbox Instant – Stream hit movies and receive 4 monthly DVD and Blu-ray rentals.
  • VUDU – World largest selection of movies and TV shows before DVD release.
  • YuppTV – 150 live Indian channels on demand.

Phew, that’s a lot of stuff. There might be an uproar if the UK launch offers a lot less in terms of these entertainment apps, which it seems like it’s going to. Still, we’ve got our PS3s for a bit, and I only really need Netflix anyway.

  1. Quite a list, which I’ve only heard of four.
I hope the UK has a similar noumber.

  2. Not sure what we’ll get in Ireland seeing as we never even got the video store. Hopefully the browser will fill in a few gaps.

    • Yeah it seems Ireland is constantly left out of the loop when comes to media apps. Looks like it will be netflix only at some stage.

  3. Crunchyroll – I hope that doesn’t make it to the Norwegian market, I would never leave my house again.

  4. id be happy to even get netflix on the ps3…

  5. Given that netflix still is not on the VITA in the EU i dont hold out much hope for a PS4 version.

  6. to be honest its only Netflix that is any good over here. Shame it wont be available on launch.

    • I disagree, lovefilm has more streaming content and more up to date streaming content.

The disks by post is unparalleled and something Netflix can’t offer.

  7. i would subscribe crunchyroll if it were available worldwide :/

  8. Where have Netflix confirmed they wouldn’t be on the PS4 at launch in the UK? Saying they will be but haven’t got any news at the moment earlier in the week doesn’t mean much.

Especially now if it’s confirmed for the US next week.

Netflix have claimed the PS3 is the most popular device for their service, so I suspect they’ll be desperately trying to make sure it’s ready for the PS4 at launch.

Although the Vita version doesn’t seem to have appeared here yet. But then, who wants to watch things on a tiny screen like that?

    • Me. I have the american version and it looks great on the OLED screen.

      • I think I was possibly asking one of those metaphorical questions.

I’m sure Netflix does look great on that lovely Vita screen though. Just a bit small for watching a whole film on. Although some of the things on Netflix might be improved by being really tiny and impossible to see.

  9. Really? No launch day app for Youtube, but we get Yupptv? Who actually uses Yupptv?

  10. Video unlimited for movies? Can you still rent movies from the PS store (main way I rent the occasional film). Or failing that, can you use your PSN credit(bought a £35 PSN card for £29 the other day in preperation for this) towards the video unlimited films.
