Sales of Sony’s latest gaming console, the PlayStation 4, surpassed one million in just 24 hours. That’s really impressive, considering that it’s only out in one region – the United States and Canada – and that’s “sold through” to consumers, rather than just shipped to stores.
The hype surrounding the launch had been huge, although the fact that Sony had been telling people to pre-order to not miss out might have had something to do with the phenomenal day one sales.
As the PS4 becomes available in Europe from the 29th of November, Sony should expect even more day one sales – perhaps another million if everything goes smoothly – and following on from that, they’ll have a boost in sales when the next shipments arrive.
Also worth noting is that the PS4 will have two further launches, in Asian territories in December and then Japan in February. This huge install base is fantastic, as it means guaranteed support from third party publishers.
All eyes on Microsoft’s worldwide Xbox One launch on Friday, then.

a million sales in a day, impressive numbers for a launch.
it’ll be interesting to compare the X1 numbers when that launches, and the EU numbers of both consoles.

I’ll probably get one after Christmas… providing there’s any in stock!

Been watching live ps4 twitch streams since yesterday. It’s been a real eye opener as ive not tried it before and can honestly see it being a go to to check out games before buying them.
Theres alot of happy ps4 owners on there which has helped ease my mind over the faulty hardware internet bushfire that started up.

:-) Actually it was a story on here, couple of months back that said Sony were loosing $60 per PS4 sold as it cost $60 more to make…(but they expected to recoup that loss with people joining PS+, buying games etc).
Not seen a story since saying hardware was cheaper to make than it was selling for.

I think its a mishmash of rising/falling currency values and different taxes internationally. All that fun stuff.

And only half of them actually work unlike mine! Worst launch for faults since Xbox 360. Joke.

Excellent start and i think it will be a similar story in Europe. It is maddening watching all those lucky US folks playing with theirs already, but it’s my own fault for watching :)
I think the XB1 will do very well too and i’m looking forward to tuesday when the review embargo lifts.

What I find impressive is that I read in another site (I feel so dirty now!) that the ps3 release in us sold 197,000 in the first 2 weeks! What a difference.
skibadee
very impressive

Why are so many people buying it? The jump between PS2 and PS3 was gigantic compared to the jump between PS3 and PS4. I assumed more people wouldn’t jump to this gen so quick.

The uptake of new models of tech is far greater across the board now than it was when the PS3 was released. Also the changes are far greater than just the graphical side, for instance 64 players on BF3.

Not bought one yet but will be doing. Played one at a gaming expo thing at work at it’s was ace. The games aren’t that much to behold yet but in a few years it’s gonna shine! And the controller is amazing to hold over the DS3.
The HDMI issues are a worry but I think the fact EVERYONE is online these days it’s very easy for a very isolated problem to become an avalanche. All the 20+ stories I read about the problem pointed to the same YouTube videos (three different vids)
YouTube wasn’t even a that big a deal in 2006. It’s all blown out of proportion, as will any/if any issues with the XBox. Especially as the gaming community as a whole are generally that divided they are cutthroat in their approach to bad mouth the competitors machine.
