Sainsbury’s Is To Stop Selling Physical Media Online

UK supermarket chain, Sainsbury’s, has announced that the company will stop selling physical entertainment media through its website, including games and consoles. The move comes after the company decided to instead focus on digital content and making that available online instead.

Speaking to MCV a Sainsbury’s spokesperson said, “This move is in line with wider industry trends towards on demand entertainment, and part of our focus on the fast-growing download and streaming market.”

The cutoff point for to order media online through Sainsbury’s is February, with anything that is to be released on or before March 15 available to purchase. It will be interesting to see how Sainsbury’s will expand its online presence and whether it will manage to strike deals with Microsoft and Sony to sell digital games on their site, similar to Amazon’s own PSN store.

Games, consoles, books, blurays, DVDs, and CDs will still be available in stores.

  1. Thats weird when supermarkets are making huge dents in traditional game retailers

    • I’m not bothered about sainsburys anyway. Asda is literally around the corner from me and its cheaper.

  2. I’m guessing they don’t sell that much online then.

    • I don’t know, businesses can make weird decisions based on ‘market trends’.

  3. Bugger. Oh well. I’ll go elsewhere.

  4. They could lose a few quid through not selling cod and fiat online.

    • I’m pretty sure this just applies to games, not fish and I’m not sure they were selling cars in the first place ;-)
