Your Memories Of A Generation

Over the last week or so the team here at TSA have been posting our Memories Of A Generation, a series of retrospective glances at our defining moments of what is now last generation. We’ve discussed everything from Modern Warfare to Minecraft, from BioShock to Burnout – and (thankfully) you lovely chaps seem to have enjoyed reading our thoughts as much as we’ve enjoyed writing them.

So, before we put Generation 7 to bed entirely, and all pack our PlayStation 3s and Xbox 360s away in the spare room, we thought we’d ask you good folk to discuss your Memories Of A Generation with us.

In the same way you would for our weekly WeView feature, we want you to share your thoughts about the past generation of consoles, and games – and it couldn’t be easier – all you need to do is leave us a comment below, and we’ll do the rest.

A couple of things to remember: Firstly, whilst you’re most certainly more than welcome to write us a 4,000 word monologue, and every word will be appreciated, we know you’re a busy bunch, so a couple of paragraphs about that one stand out moment is more than enough. And finally, we merely ask that if you want to be included in our round-up post next week, you try to leave your comments before the evening of Sunday December 15th – as that gives us a bit of time to read them all and once again reminisce on what has been a monumental period for gamers.

Over to you!

i spent hours playing quake and unreal on my dreamcast even in its dying days of online i think the quake servers were the last to go.i used to love the sound that the dreamcast made when it was connecting to the web..a lovely little telephone ring..awwww.
well onwards and upwards so they say..
ps4 in the new year and maybe the xbone later?

    • I used to love playing MSR, Powerstone, Shenmue and SF Alpha 2 on my Dreamcast. I wish I kept mine.

      • I still have mine! It doesn’t see the light of day very often but MSR, Powerstone and Shenmue have at least a yearly outing!

    • I actually found my old Dreamcast in a suitcase in my attic about 2 weeks ago. I only remember playing the hell out of Soul Calibur & V Rally 2 but to my surprise theres about 10 games there. I was never a gamer at that point but my mate (or more like random mate of a mate) owed me £20 & couldn’t afford to pay me so I took his Dreamcast lol.

  3. Probably my most treasured memories are of Modern Warfare 2, playing multiplayer will loads of my friends. It was just so much fun mucking about every evening, laughing our heads off and absolutely anything.

Second to that is probably the feeling felt when Ghost died in MW2, or at the end of Red Dead Redemption, or maybe even parts of Assassins Creed 2, climbing up to the top of the cathedral building and just looking around the city. Blah, so many memories from so many games!

  4. oh right i get it you want to know about this gen….lol (note to self lay off the sauce at lunch)

    cod 4
    cod 2
    gears of war (hoarde mode)

    batman
    dishonored.
i think its fair to say we have been blessed with many great games over the years
some real hidden gems and some right cack.lets hope that the new gen can keep us happy for another decade..

  5. I’ll start off by listing some of the games on PS3 that have led me to love gaming, even at my advanced age….The games are listed in no particular order….

    Red Dead Redemption
    Warhawk
    GTA IV & V
    Uncharted 2
    Batman : Arkham Asylum
    CoD III
    Infamous
    Bioshock
    Oblivion & Skyrim
    Just Cause 2
    LBP 1 & 2
    Modnation Racers
    Fallout 3 & New Vegas
    Gran Turismo 5
    Killzone 2
    Burnout Paradise
    Far Cry 3

I could list a load more games but I won’t.
As most of the guys have been sharing their gaming memories of the PS3 – 360 generation, I thought that I’d share a slightly different memory…..

My very first experience of the PS3 was attending a midnight launch at my local GAME store. There was around 20 of us lined up outside the shopping centre that housed the GAME store and even though we were all strangers we were all having a laugh and a joke. At 11:40 one of the employees from GAME led us inside and lined us up inside their store and started processing our orders. One by one we showed our pre-order receipts and the 6 staff members got our orders ready. As soon as it hit 12:00 we started paying for our bundles and I left the store around 12:15 and got the night bus home. As soon as I got home at around 01:10 I set about setting up the PS3 on my new HDTV. As I wasn’t exactly a millionaire I could only afford the 1 game at launch which was Resistance: FOM. I switched on the PS3 and was very impressed with the XMB (which was just a shadow of the way it is now)
I loaded up the game and was immediately stunned by the graphic quality. As I was up at 7:00 for work I grudgingly headed to bed at 03:30 but I was looking forward to getting home from work again so that I could experience more of Resistance FOM. As this is waaay longer than I intended I’ll finish up by saying that if the PS4 generation is even half as good as the PS3 generation then we’re all in for a great ride.

  6. Booting up a cheap little PS Mini called Velocity and being totally blown away by the gameplay and music.

  7. Red Ring of Death – After two grey Xbox360’s and one black Elite edition I was done with Microsoft, however the original Gears of War game was amazing. Brilliant campaign for a co-op with a friend. I got a PS3 when it launched and sold my Elite.

PS3 was the way forward – playing Motorstorm the first time blew me away. Killer tunes and just such a fun racing game.

Beat Zico – this trophy still defeats me. I have achieved it on the WipEout2048 on the Vita but I just can not get this on WipEout HD. For those that haven’t wasted hours/day/weeks trying to beat 30.82 seconds on Anulpha Pass, this has to be one of the toughest trophies out there. Only 0.3% seem to have pulled this off so far. I might yet have another go while waiting for my PS4 to arrive.

I thought Heavy Rain was a stand out game, something completely different to most of the stuff already out there.
    Same for LittleBigPlanet.

    • I had 3 Xbox 360’s in the space of 2 weeks. After the 3rd went wrong I decided to spend a bit extra on a PS3. The only thing I miss or memory of the Xbox was getting right to the end of Gears of War & never being able to complete it as the disc was being scratched and unplayable which happened with all 3 consoles. Microsoft literally insisted I must have turned the consoles from horizontal to vertical whilst I had a disc in… I never touched the bloody consoles, they laid flat on a cabinet but all 3 suddenly started making a weird noise and scratching the discs. I did read around that time that there was a batch with fault disc drives.

  8. Fallout 3 & N.V.
    Burnout paradise
Fifa 12 (1st time truly let fifa in. PES5 for life)
    HAWX
    GTA V
    MGS 4
    Rockband 1,2 and 3
    FC3
    TLoU
    All uncharteds

    • Thomas was alone
      GoW3
      Heavy rain
      The walking dead
      LBP 2
      Batman AA & AC
      PS+
All these games gave me real enjoyment last gen.
      PES (all of them really)
      GTA IV
      Pain
      CoD MW2
Releasing broken games and unwanted DLC
      Ps move and Kinect
They have all disappointed me last gen. I know I’ve missed loads but I do have some great memories from Ps3.

  9. It’s been great reading such a wide variety of opinions about the most popular games of the last seven years as well as everyone’s love and passion for those easily missed niche titles. My five go like this…

F1 Championship Edition. It was the first game I played (back in 2007 in the Camberley Sony Centre) and then owned on my beautifully heavy and expensive 60gigabyter. I was and still am in awe of the sharp graphics, clean textures and eye wateringly fast gameplay. It was a great introduction to the new generation of games.

Metal Gear Solid 4. I’m basically in love with Kojima and my comments to that effect just get ignored now so I’ll just say Guns of The Patriots is incredible, awesome, perfect. Immersion at its best.

Burnout Paradise. To me it’s the best game of the generation, unbeatably fun without offending any Daily Mail readers. I really loved the soundtrack, it was probably the last fling with so much punk rock for EA, and I really really loved the near bug-free perfection that the wonderful softies maintained from release right up to today. Considering the amount of broken crap we consumers have paid for in the last few years they should be proud.

SSX. I absolutely adored this beautifully realised reboot which took the best of SSX 3 and On Tour and plastered lots of shiny 720p mountain on my eyeballs whilst stuffing The Naked and Famous in my ears. It was another triumph of funness and, like Burnout, remained largely faithful to the best bits of its predecessors. Having said that, I never played Tricky but I get the impression that the Tricky fans didn’t get on with SSX so well. Never mind eh.

The PSN. I tried long and hard to get Battlefront 2 and Burnout 3 online multiplayer working back in 2005, I think I got in a lobby a few times and very briefly into one game, what a bloody nightmare!! Thank you Sony for blessing us with the network. There have been trials for you and frustrations for us, a hack or two and plenty of updates and downtime but your wonderful network has made playing games on t’internet possible and through adversity we have built friendships and with those friends learned to hate squealing 13 year old Americans together.

    • Same, Burnout Paradise for me has been the most outstanding title of the gen.

      Uncharted 1 and 2 (3 was a bit pish)
      SuperStardustHD
      Tomb Raider
GT5(eventually), bettered by GT6 so far!
      Dirt 2
      Grid
      F1 2011
      Just Cause 2
      Rayman (both titles)

      To name a few faves.

  10. Well I can echo the love for Warhawk and Mass Effect 2, but I’ve not seen much of a mention of Demon’s Souls in these memories. So I better fly the flag, simply because it’s the best game I’ve played in the last fifteen years, by a country mile. A masterpiece from start to fifth play-through finish. The first time I left the Nexus, first time I got invaded, the first terrifying trip into the Tower of Latria, the fifteenth attempt at Flamelurker, my strange attachment to a +5 Quality Broadsword, and the Old “WTF just happened” Monk.

A second strange new experience from this generation has to be peddling my game creations for downloads, all for the pleasure of getting others playing my stuff and hankering after a pointless digital platinum trophy. My brother and I managed to get our first LBP level featured in IGN’s weekly choices, and I got one of my ModNation Racers tracks on that First Play show on PSN. Kind of wish the PS3 had a share button so I had some lasting record of all my efforts.
