Your Memories Of A Generation

Over the last week or so the team here at TSA have been posting our Memories Of A Generation, a series of retrospective glances at our defining moments of what is now last generation. We’ve discussed everything from Modern Warfare to Minecraft, from BioShock to Burnout – and (thankfully) you lovely chaps seem to have enjoyed reading our thoughts as much as we’ve enjoyed writing them.

So, before we put Generation 7 to bed entirely, and all pack our PlayStation 3s and Xbox 360s away in the spare room, we thought we’d ask you good folk to discuss your Memories Of A Generation with us.

In the same way you would for our weekly WeView feature, we want you to share your thoughts about the past generation of consoles, and games – and it couldn’t be easier – all you need to do is leave us a comment below, and we’ll do the rest.

A couple of things to remember: Firstly, whilst you’re most certainly more than welcome to write us a 4,000 word monologue, and every word will be appreciated, we know you’re a busy bunch, so a couple of paragraphs about that one stand out moment is more than enough. And finally, we merely ask that if you want to be included in our round-up post next week, you try to leave your comments before the evening of Sunday December 15th – as that gives us a bit of time to read them all and once again reminisce on what has been a monumental period for gamers.

Over to you!

  1. Oh where to start…

Borderlands 2: playing with 3 friends all shooting and letting our way round Pandora was an absolutely awesome experience and has been difficult to replicate in other games since then. Can’t wait to see if there’s a BL3!!

Fallout 3: Stepping out into the Wasteland for the first time was jaw dropping. The bleak and barren landscape was just there to be explored and listening to the wonderful commentary of 3 Dog on the radio just added to the overall atmosphere. If Bethesda can take the story/control of Fallout NV and the world of F3 then whenever Fallout 4 is out, I’ll be there day one!!

GTA V: Quite possibly the perfect open world game. With an excellent and engrossing story and 3 distinctly different characters to fool around with, there was nothing to hold you back in San Andreas. Online is just superb and I dearly hope Rockstar release it on next gen as I will happily pay again for such an awesome experience.

Motorstorm: I picked the first one as it was my first ever PS3 game. After picking my console up at a midnight Game launch, I had to wait for this to arrive in the post the next day. I left college early just to go play it and by god I was astounded. The way the tracks altered every lap beau see of the mud trials, and the wide collection of vehicles to drive, carnage ensued many as time in the first months of my PS3’s life.

Bioshock + Infinite: My personal favourite games of the entire generation. Was gutted to wait till winter ’08 for Bioshock on PS3 as it looked so good, but it was worth the wait. One of the best stories ever put into a game and an ending that has yet to be beaten in my opinion. Just brilliant! Infinite is my GOTY for 2013 and even splashed out on the songbird edition too. A fantastically realised AI character in Elizabeth, a superb and well created world in Columbia and another epic story conclusion makes this worthy of any gamers collection.

    Just my two cents ;)

  2. So many fond memories so I’ll keep it short:

Final Fantasy XIII: Despite all the hate it got it is one of my favorite Final Fantasies. Loved the battle system. The graphics are still great for a PS3 game.

Red Faction: Guerilla: Probably the most fun I had in a videogame in god knows how long. The destruction physics are still some of the best there are this gen. Hopefully the studio that picked up the license from THQ puts it to good use.

Just Cause 2: Over the top fun in line with RFG.

Dead Space 1: Probably the best horror game I’ve played this gen. Barely touched
DS2 but what I played didn’t get close to the first game.

Journey: Just an overall great experience.

The return of the Oddworld franchise: I was finally able to experience Stranger’s Wrath HD and Munch’s Oddysee HD (I never owned an Xbox) so I’m glad JAW took over Oddworld Inhabitant’s work. The remaked are awesome and I can’t wait to see what they have in store in the future.

Indy games: Minecraft, Spelunky, Bastion and the likes. So many hours well spent.

I know I’m forgetting a few things but that should cover most of it.

    • Yup, forgot Borderlands 1. Coop was amazing. Local coop is on a stark decline and that sucks big time. :(

  3. My standout moment of the generation would have to be the Little Sisters from Bioshock. Considering myself to be a nice guy I vowed to rescue every one of them, however as the game progressed I found myself needing more and more adam to upgrade with so I decided to harvest the odd Little Sister but still save the majority.

After a while I found myself harvesting everyone I could lay my hands on, justifying my actions by saying ‘survival of the fittest’ while becoming stronger. Eventually I finished the game and, obviously, had the evil ending. At that point I sat back and realised that I had become nothing more than one of the many Splicers I had slaughtered along the way, just as addicted, just as insane as they were.

That is not a happy thought but it marked the first time a game had such a profound effect on me. Turning me from trying to do the right thing, to a virtual drug addict willing to kill innocents to get my fix. That is why Bioshock and the Little Sisters stand out amongst the entire generation for me.

  4. Burnout Paradise-When I first got my playstation 3 this was my first title I think and I still played it until about 6 months ago easily the best arcade racing sim to grace the PS3 and Xbox! It was the most fun I have had online and I am shocked there has not been a follow up let’s hope at E3 we get a little info on a next gen Burnout

MAG-easily my favourite FPS of all time I bought on release which back then was rare for me and I sunk over 70 hovers into the online mode and I had brilliant fun there was always a spot In a map where there was epic battles and when you did (which was rare) fill out a game with 256 players online it took War to a whole new level you couldn’t walk 10 steps which out grenades been thrown towards you! Only negative to the game was there was not a whole lot of support from Sony which to me lead to the demise of MAG but I still hope that one day we get to see a new outing.maybe a F2P version in the PS4

Uncharted 2-the first adventure for Nathan Drake was great but it lacked those blockbuster moments which the Uncharted franchise Is now know for I mean the ending to me pressing square,Triangle to beat the bad guy really brown a downer to the game but when I first played Uncharted 2 I remember been blown away by the graphics, the voice acting was superb, the set pieces blew you away and the cover system was the best I have experienced in a game truelly was in my eyes the greatest game of the last gen for the train sequence alone

Heavy Rain-the storytelling was possibly the best I have seen and the voice acting was great and despite my reservations about it after seeing the game was practically an interactive movie which you just mash triangle, square and circle together but when playing it I remember just been blown away by how gorgeous it looked and when you lose the kid and you see the struggle of the dad and other son it really does hit you,it’s the first game but not the last which brought a tear to my eye for people who have not played this game or movie whatever it is play it you will love it

The Walking Dead by telltale-I have never been more inpatient in waiting for the next chapter in the series just so I can see what’s going to happen to Clementine and Lee and it always kept you hooked with a lot of great characters along the ways and a strong narrative it set it apart from other games and deserved it he countless awards it won and it was the first and only game which brought me to tears at the end..truly amazing

Honourable Mention-Batman Arkham Asylum,Battlefield Bad Company 2,The Last Of Us,GTA V and UFC Undisputed 3

  5. I love how games this generation have gone one step further with the storylines. Some of my favourites with top quality plots with tight gameplay include Bioshock, Dead Space, Uncharted and Limbo among others.

  6. Memories. That’s what this generation has brought me. And it has been a great generation and for me it will still go on as I’m keeping ps3 and yet to buy 4.

From getting my ps3 for mgs4 and gta 4, with a 17″ tv, when i used to stay at my parents for the first part of the week and had all day Monday and Tuesday to play, to now living with my gf and 15 month old, with 37″ tv, and getting a couple of hours at night with the headphones.

Loved lots of games, still a backlog to play. MGS 4 blew me away and I remember playing through it about 10 times to take it all in, Uncharted 1 on Boxing Day after getting it as it was just an adventure game on the ps3. Who knew?
Waiting up half the night for the firmware update with trophies in it and trying to play all of super stardust for the trophies (failed) and then being a trophy addict. I loved the HD collections as I never played god of war, ratchet and clank and jak and daxter! I remember booking the day off work for Uncharted 2 and staying up all night, thinking it was worth it and it really was.

Heavy rain was interesting, and I remember loving LA Noir but only playing the first half, the same with mirrors edge. I remember trying and succeeding to get the Burnout paradise platinum and still playing the DLC afterwards as the support for that was brilliant.

flOw and Flower were excellently different, I remember getting back from work at about midnight and playing flower and it was so good, a perfect time to play.

I remember days in the summer a few years back when my best mate used to come round and we’d play Red Faction guerrilla and just destroy any bridge or building we could because it was fun.

And I remember this summer when I had The last of Us and every time little one went down for her nap id be playing it. And recently when the mrs went to her mums will little one coincidently when gta V came out and spent at least 12 hours of the day going through that first half of it.

For me, this generation is tied to many many memories.
