Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition Not Coming To PC, PS3 or 360

An FAQ on the game’s official forums has revealed that the upcoming Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition will not be seeing a PC release, nor will it offer any sort of perks or promotions to owners of 2013’s original looking to upgrade.

“Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition was designed and rebuilt from the ground up for next-generation consoles. At this time a PC update is not planned.” says the FAQ, which goes on to promise native 1080p gameplay alongside “improved lighting and shadow caster system, more detailed storytelling visuals, massive amounts of more particle effects, a fully simulated physics world, and the new next-gen Lara.”

As well as all new Kinect, Dualshock 4 and PS Vita compatibility Tomb Raider’s Definitive Edition will also include all of the original game’s post-release DLC, a digital comic, art book, and the behind the scenes video documentary series “The Final Hours of Tomb Raider”.

Eidos has also confirmed that Tomb Raider Definitive Edition will cost $60 at retail in the US when it launches on January 28, with a similar price point expected in Europe at the games January 31st release. A digital version of the title will also be available, although pricing here has not been discussed. No discounts will be offered for owners of the original game.

  1. There’s no new version on PC because it probably won’t be needed. All the graphical improvements they’re talking about will likely just bring the PS3/360 version up to the PC level.

“No discounts will be offered for owners of the original game.”

Well of course not, its Square Enix!

    • I think the article is on about the Xbox One and PS4 version so the idea is that they’ll excel the PC version that came out last year. Although, by how much (in the flesh, as it were) remains to be seen.

  2. Isn’t the PC version already the definitive edition considering all it is is some graphical improvements bundled with DLC?

    • The new version includes such dramatic changes as Lara’s necklace having “realistic physics”. You wont find those on PC.

“We’ve also smoothed over edges on elbows.” Enhanced elbow tech is the future.

      • Ha, I remember AMD made a big thing over the TressFX or whatever it was called that made her hair look nice.

      • Real talk though: much more realistic skin with sub-surface scattering and better textures as well as more polygons and nicer eyes. It will look better graphically than Pc version maxed out, but framerate will remain at 30 (they won’t answer if it’ll be 60, so…).

But I wonder if the other characters have been given an update to match Laura or if she’ll stand out as the Belle of the ball.

  3. Amazon still don’t have this for preorder, think I’m going to go with SimplyGames as its £36 which isn’t bad.

    • Are they good SimplyGames? I’ve always been way of them. I don’t know why though. Will the game get top me on release day?

      • *to me

      • I’ve only used them once, but the delivery was v quick. Ordered same day as AC4 from amazon and that still hasn’t turned up – where as BF4 turned up Saturday.

The other thing I like is they don’t take the money from the preorder until few days b4 despatch.

… So, so far so good lol.

      • Ah thanks for reply. I’ll give this a try then. I never bought it on Ps3 and will get it through these.

      • I’ve used SimplyGames… also CDKeys.com for buying PC keys for the likes of Steam. Stunning turnaround on the latter.

      • Thanks I’ll keep those in mind. I did used to used Amazon prettymuch exclusive but they’ve stopped using price promise so I’m pretty much passing full price for games. It’s not good policy in my eyes.

  4. It’ll be interesting to see how it compares to the PC version but i’m more interested in what they are going to do with the next Tomb Raider game than re-playing this one so soon.

  5. This is one of those games I really want to play but I’ve been holding off because as soon as I buy it it’ll show up on PSPlus.

    • True. Has a lot of PS+ potential this one.

  6. Publishers must be loving this new gen. Now I see why they didn’t want backwards compatibility. So they can sell us the same stuff all over again. Quite literally money for old rope. Infact, more money than when the rope was sold for the first time…

Will not buy under any circumstances.

    • You are assuming that everyone has played it before though. Lots of people have never experienced some games, either because they were exclusives to a console they didn’t own, or they just never bought it.

I don’t see anything wrong with these games being re-released. How is it different from someone with a PS3 and PC. I’ve not seen people saying “I can’t believe they are releasing GTAV on the PC, I’ve already played it on the PS3”.

The hardware is really new, and I as many would love there to be more exclusives and *new* games, but realistically its going to take 6-12 months before the game library offers some variety and new franchises. I do think that Sony should have had a couple more titles ready for launch, but I think they were expecting Watchdogs and DriveClub to keep people happy which obviously didn’t happen.

I do agree about the pricing though, its the one thing that’s really irking me at the moment – though hopefully these re-releases will be a bit cheaper (I’ve seen Tomb Raider for £36 and saw mention of Rayman Legends being £30). With the popularity of the PS4 though, there’s very little risk at the moment – resale on auction sites is very strong and you can easily get a good chunk of your investment back when you’ve finished/got fed up with a game.

      • The pricing is my main gripe, but I guess I’m just seeing it from a different perspective.

To me it just exposes the lack of backwards compatability as an artificial form of maufactured obsolescence. I mean, it’s supposed to be cutting edge hardware, but it can’t run software that’s less than a year old? Seriously? If it’s the exact same engine with a few graphical tweaks, why couldn’t they just let you put the PS3/360 disc in your PS4/Xbone and download a patch (for a price, ofcourse) to make it all work and look nice?

Plus the timing. They know there is very little in the way of software out there at the moment. So while I agree that not everyone will have played it before. I would guess that the vast majority of those that end up getting it on the new gen systems, will have already played it in it’s previous incarnation.

  7. I loved the single player, and would really like to play it on PS4. However, after watching the trailers it really doesn’t look that much better, and certainly not £40 better. And then where does it stop – do I buy The Last of Us and GTA5 again if they are released on PS4? I think if I’ve played a game before, albeit the incomplete, inferior version that’ll just have to be good enough. The first experience is usually the best anyway, and it means I can buy or play games I haven’t already experienced.

Even if I hadn’t played TR on PS3, considering it didn’t look bad – and the DLC was pretty crap anyway (mostly multiplayer) – I’d possibly still opt for the PS3 version since it can be picked up for about £12-£15 now.

  8. Already played and enjoyed this one, so not interested in a spruced up version. Didn’t get round to buying Rayman Legends though, so will probs grab that on PS4. I’m not fussed about these upgraded re-releases too much, so long as it doesn’t become every bloody game and proper new releases get stagnant. If I’d never played PS3 Tomb Raider, I’d be hyped on a PS4 version.
