PlayStation Vita Original And Slim Comparisons Gallery

Earlier today, Sony announced their plans to release the PS Vita Slim in the UK. To quickly recap, it’s thinner, it’s lighter, it has a longer battery life and there’s a 1GB block of memory built in, but sadly loses the OLED screen in the process.

It’s entering the market with an SRP of £180 and is set to replace the original design, with bundles and the actual pricing being worked on alongside retailers. If you want the OLED screen though, you might want to hurry up about it. There are several great offers and bundles around and the remaining stocks won’t last forever.

This is the same model as was released in Japan last year, so you might have seen some comparisons before, but since we have one of the new model Vitas in our possession, we figured we’d do our own anyway!

The PS Vita Slim is the bottom model in all photos.

Just from these images you can see the difference in the design, from the ever-so-slightly recessed touchscreen and smaller rear touchpad to the soft touch rubber used for the back and sides.

Heading to the screen, something which is quite difficult to illustrate, there is a noticeable difference in colour saturation, with the OLED of the original model more vivid. There seems to be a slight shift in the white point of the LED screen, which gives it a slightly different tint. Both screens have rather good viewing angles.

That’s all for now, but we’ll be back with a more in depth look at the new Vita soon.

  1. Do not want.

  2. But… but… hilariously the photos are taken with perspective ruining any size comparisons on a couple of the key views. Haha. :-)

  3. I might trade my Vita in this weekend to get a new as mine is quite worn. I know I’m throwing money away but I want OLED screen. A better battery is all that is really required for the Vita.

  4. It’s definitely a better looking product. Just a shame about the OLED/LCD comparisons. Some of those images clearly demonstrated the difference in contrast, saturation, vibrancy etc.

It’s a fantastic piece of kit though, and I can’t recommend it enough if you do any amount of travelling / mobile gaming. Especially if you have a PS+ subscription…

  5. I’m not interested in getting a Vita, but I think it’s a shame the new one has lost it’s ‘single piece’ facia. Also, is the longer battery just down to the new screen?

  6. Regarding changes doesn’t the new one use Micro USB port for charging instead of the non-standard port of the original as well? It looks that way from your photos though I can’t be sure.

Look forward to reading the more in depth review – I’d be interested to know what you guys think of it and whether you actually think its a better product than the OLED version.

I saw a video on YouTube of a guy playing Tearaway on the new slim model (import from Japan) and he said that the smaller touch screen on the back wasn’t a massive issue but on games like Tearaway where you “poke” your finger through the back of the device into the world it was noticeable because it isn’t calibrated for the smaller sized touchpad. I know very few games (er I can actually only think of Tearaway!) use it in this way, but I wonder if Sony will be able to address that in some way.

    • That’s right, they use Micro USB for charging now, and the rear pad is smaller, so I’ll have to look into that point for you!

      • Sounds good, look forward to the review :)

  7. I’ll stick with my 64GB OLED VITA
    :)

    • Damn straight! Not giving up on the mysterious port next to the cartridge-slot!

      • What is that port, is there an explanation for it?

  8. I know it’s hard to seriously compare the two screens from images, I actually prefer the slim in those shots. There may be an advantage to being colour blind after all…

  9. I love my Vita (my first pun in English?). I only bought it this last Christmas and I was thinking for months if I should wait or not for the slim version. I am glad I didn’t. In my opinion weight, colour and battery outweigh the difference in screen’s colour saturation, but I really dislike the slightly recessed touch screen. That rim around the screen… I hate it!

  10. i personally think the new one looks cheap.
i prefer the old one’s nice metal edge..slim looks more like a toy rather than a serious piece of gaming kit.
I’m loving the remote play at the minute on my old fatty..
as for battery life,i don’t really suffer too bad as most of the time I’m indoors.
can recommend the vita if you haven’t got one..
