Following on from the success of The LEGO Movie, which is currently at the top of the box office and entertaining children and adults alike across the world with its use of imagine and creativity, Warner Bros. are set to take another building property to the big screen.
They’ve acquired the film rights from Mojang, the developer of Minecraft, and there’s a lot of interest in a live-action project. Roy Lee, who produced The LEGO Movie and is working on the sequel, is once again involved.
With over 100 million users, and a colossal fan base spanning all ages, a Minecraft movie seems as though it could be big. Providing they nail the comedic tone and don’t follow a path too similar to LEGO, they might have something genuinely interesting planned.
What would you expect from a Minecraft movie? The protagonist, Steve, is certainly befitting of the quiet hero role that we saw with Emmett in The LEGO Movie, but how do you think they should handle the plot and the tone? Could we see a lighthearted building movie, or a harrowing escape from monsters that come at night?
Maybe they’ll even make a tie-in game.

Sadly I think ‘a path too similar to LEGO’ is exactly what they’ll take.
Like LEGO, Minecraft has no intrinsic plot, personalities or even locations. It’s all invented by the players. That said, Lego does have the Lego versions of actual characters like Batman. Minecraft lacks even that.
That could mean a nice playground to be really inventive with the movie and I hope they go that way. I don’t have a lot of faith in Hollywood though.
Live Action would be a big mistake too. The look/style is what MAKES Minecraft.

yawn. such varied literature out there that could be made into a movie rather than this dross. Nothing against minecraft but a movie ? really ?

LEGO movie I understand because that is a part of my childhood. However, Minecraft on the other hand seems to be a waste of time. I don’t really get all the hype and fuss over Minecraft in the first place.
