Sony Relaxing Vita First Party Output, Focusing On Indie Games

You may have noticed a distinct lack of new Vita games announced from first party studios at this year’s Sony E3 conference, but the system has its fair share of indie and third party titles on its way, and it seems as though that’s Sony’s focus going forward.

Speaking to Polygon, Shuhei Yoshida described how PS3 quality titles in the palm of your hands was no longer the in-demand thing, just as the PSP’s PS2 quality titles faded at the release of the PS3:

“It was an amazing experience to play PS2-quality like Twisted Metal on your portable device. But as time went on and the PS3 launched and people started to see next-gen games, that PS2 quality was not enough. People’s expectations for the quality just moved on.

“So when we launched the Vita with Uncharted, it was amazing; PS3-like quality in your palm, but as time moved on, you are seeing PS4 quality and people’s expectations for the graphic fidelity has gone up.”

Yoshida explains that he feels as though it is “very fortunate” that the indie uprising happened and was able to breathe new life into the Vita, but confirmed that the notion that the Vita would be getting less first-party games was “correct”.

This has all been a long time coming, but to hear it confirmed from Shuhei Yoshida himself may be quite disheartening for those who want more experiences like WipEout 2048, Uncharted: Golden Abyss and Killzone Mercenary in their hands. We may not even see titles such as Tearaway – which work perfectly on the system – at all in the near future, and could instead face ports of older games or an abundance of indie titles.

  1. It’s been a while since I’ve posted here but this has annoyed me greatly. Just bought a vita at the weekend only to be greeted by this news a few days later. I was assuming by the time I got through all the current AAA games there might have been a few more on the horizon. Should have guessed after the no show at E3.

    • I just bought one of the original models last night in order to play all the ps+ games I have for it. This news is extremely disheartening as I was looking forward to more great games for it, without ever buying one!

  2. Sad, but I just priced mine up at CEX with the games and will be trading it in for a Google Nexus 7. If it’s just for indy games I may as well get a tablet as at least it will also have decent app support.

    • Love my Nexus 7 brilliant HD display great stereo sound amazing battery life, puts my iPad with retina display to shame when it comes to battery iPad lasts an hour or 2 can use the Nexus 7 virtually all day.

      • Already got the original model which I have passed to my Wife who will now use it to feed her spotify. Picked up a 2013 model from CEX as new and the screen is unreal compared to the old model. I feel like I should hold a wake for the Vita.

      • Win win then but poor vita just remember it fondly if you skip the wake:D,and yes the screen is fantastic fantastic around really.

      • all round not around….dam Nexus 7 predictive text lol ;)

  3. :( Shame as the Vita is a great bit of kit. Providing they keep giving me free games each month I won’t mind too much. Playing Borderlands and FFX HD on it has pretty much justified the handheld’s £65 price tag anyway.

  4. Very sad. Even one or two double A games would be enough… But nothing at E3… That’s just crazy and a sign Sony are less behind it than Nintendo are the Wii U.

  5. Very disappointing. Looks like its gone the same way as the PSP. Devs not willing to make expensive games for it due to the install base being too small.

Time to head to Cex I think.
