Classically styled RPGs are making a comeback these days, and a lot of this is down to Kickstarter projects such as Pillars of Eternity and Divinity: Original Sin, but there are always risks when backing a project. The most common risk is that you’ll see delays on the way to release, and Pillars has suffered from just such a delay, being pushed back to early 2015.
We’ve seen similar delays with other kickstarted games, as the realities of game development collide with the idealised wish fulfillment of a Kickstarter pitch, but these generally lead to a better and more polished end product. With the backer beta under way since August 18th, it’s given Obsidian a lot of feedback on the game, which they are rolling back into their development and was given as a reason in the delay’s post on the Paradox forums.
Feargus Urquhart, CEO Obsidian, wrote, “Since the very beginning of this project we promised our fans and ourselves that we would release this game only when we knew it would be absolutely ready for the best experience possible. We’re very close to that point, but not quite there yet.
“The feedback we have received through our playtest process has been invaluable to us. We are coming into the home stretch but are pushing the release out just a bit to make sure we honor that promise we made originally. Thanks for your patience and support, it will be worth the wait.”
Of course, it’s not so bad for backers, who can play the beta some more and experiment with futher character designs. The rest of you will have to wait a little longer before you create your idiot muscle wizards…

There’s such a glut of top-drawer games coming over the next few months, I really don’t mind seeing this delayed. It’ll get lost between the juggernaut-sized franchises and everyone else trying to cram it all in to the Christmas season.
However, if anyone is interested in how these sorts of games are turning out, Divinity: Original Sin has been one of the best top-down role-playing/fantasy games I’ve ever played. It’s only on the PC, I believe, but is an absolute treat. Just be prepared to research things online as it doesn’t hold your hand at all and you can feel lost in the beginning with regards to how you go about things.
